The 18 medals won by Singapore students at the recently completed 2010 International Olympiads for Science and Mathematics are by students from 4 schools (with number of medals won indicated), namely:

RI - 7
NUS High - 7
HCI - 2
ACS - 2

What happens to other JCs and IP schools? It seems that top Maths & Science students prefer to go to RI and NUS High, followed by HCI and ACS.

What I meant was, the medalists are dominated by only 4 schools. Why are other JCs like VJC (supposedly one of top JCs), TJC, ACJC etc. and IP schools like NJC, RV and DHS not producing any Science and Maths talents at all?

all the IP schools and all the JCs add up to more than 20

for those international olympiad, each team has max 6 members (? anyone please confirm!) - so it is impossible to have any one from the many others. the team is supposedly selected from among the top local competition winners

many of these top talents in math / science were already "choped" by the top DSA schools since Pri 5 via their many activities

as a matter of fact, the IP schools are openly competing for top students from the top primary schools by organising many activities and camps for them since Pri 5 to gauge their ability. other JCs which do not have sec one class will have a drought of these top students who are already picked away by the top IP schools

Ya lor, top math wizards are 'choped' by RI via DSA. Who can resist the brandname?

I think more and more top math wizards are going to NUS High, instead of RI. I predict that this year's SMO(Junior) top individual and top team award will be won by NUS High students again, just like last year.

Let's see a few years from now, if NUS High is able to dominate the participants to these international maths & science olympiads ...

Maximum number of participants for each international olympiad
IBO - 4
IPhO - 5
IChO - 4
IMO - 6

Agree. Among those IP schools which take in students from sec 1, RI and NUS High seem to be performing quite well in the various Math & Science competitions. I am quite surprised that HCI has so few representatives in the international olympiads this year.

I have checked the statistics from MOE website for International Maths & Science Olympiads participation in the past 4 years. Interestingly, all the medalists came from these 4 schools again!

Schools (Year 2010, 2009, 2008, 2007)
RI (7, 7, 6, 9)
NUSH (7, 5, 7, 1)
HCI (2, 5, 2, 4)
ACS (2, 1, 2, 4)

These are four of the top schools in Singapore so it's not surprising that the winners have all come from these schools.

Isn't it interesting that NUS High got kicked out of the ongoing National Science Challenge Quiz in the first round? They didn't even make it to the semi-finals.

Isn't it more interesting if Bukit Panjang Gov High Sch beats RI and RGS to be champion of the NSC 2010? Remember, BPGHS beat RI and NUS High in NSC 2009.

On a side note, I often wonder why there is no million dollar scheme for our academic olympiad winners, unlike their sports counterparts. Why is life so unfair?
