I don't give data plan to DS at all, his school has free wifi, if he's outside, he uses SG wireless whenever he can link up...
at home, he just uses the home wifi.
He has been bugging me for data plan, but seeing his inability to control his hp urge, I've been saying NO.

Good for you! My kids who didn't have data plans all the way through JC. My older girl has just been given a data plan (but she isn't the kind to use much); the younger one is like your son - wifi in school and at home, free wifi outside if she can get it. They don't need it if they are mostly at school or at home.

Ha, this is my last line of defence agst the hp...I'm planning to hold off data plan as much as I can.....lucky for now,
DS sort of just accepted our NO and did not keep coming to us and did not kick up a big fuss....I want it to stay this way!

My battle with yes to data or no to data is not with my kids. It's with DH. I have long accepted the fact that when it comes to gadgets and the latest IT n social media trends, I have to concede. Easier to manage the kids than the husband.

My kids dont hv data oso. My eldest was given data in J1, cuz he claimed he needs it for pw. Once his pw finished, I cancelled the data. In fact, I took away his hp for a few mths bef his A lvls. Nobody cld contact him, worked miracles for his A lvls : )

They dont need data in school. Their schools doesnt allow the use of hp in class also. Unless maybe, they need to take pics of stuff on the board or stuff that their teachers are flashing on screen. After three in sec sch and JC, I think they need a camera more than a hp : )

whatsapp is not really reliable. what irritates me is instagram...you will see so-and-so is following you.
super bo liao. as long as daughter does her homework, revises and knows her limits, i will clam. i've already reminded her that she is facing SA1 until 8/5. last night, i heard son warning her to work hard.

Will getting them to type on Whatsapp Web give you more liberty of observation and monitoring?

Not unless you have access to their Whatsapp Web also. But I wouldn't recommend doing that. Teenagers need their privacy, and many parents mean well and worry about their children that sometimes they invade that privacy without thinking. This will definitely lead to the child having less and less trust in the parent, since they feel so suffocated at having what's supposed to be private monitored all the time. Teens need privacy and space to go. If parents don't respect that, they will grow up with many trust issues, not just towards parents, but also towards other people, making it difficult for them to create good, healthy friendships and relationships.
