DD got HCL=A1 Emath=A2 A math/physics/chemistry=B3 Bio=B4 Combined humans= A2
She wants to go the JCs with cop of 8 or 9(according to last year). Is there a high chance to be successful? Can choose CLEP help? In fact, is there really that many students choosing CLEP? Please recommend some better JCs that she can go with this score. Very urgent!

No point signing up for CLEP if the kid has no interest but do so in order to get into a "good" JC.

As stated in the JAE booklet >>
"Applicants who gained admission into the JC using the 2 bonus points awarded for CLEP/MLEP (refer to Section 3 for more details on bonus points) are required to remain in the CLEP/MLEP and sit for the GCE ‘A’ level H2 Chinese/Malay Language and Literature examinations. Students who fail to do so may be asked to leave the JC."

Not sure where you stay and what stream your DD likes to study, but below are some points for you to consider.

1) As stated in the JAE 2014 booklet,
“Students who wish to apply for the CLEP or MLEP should do so when they apply online via the JAE Internet System (JAE-IS). Students who apply for CLEP or MLEP and are selected for the programme can enjoy two bonus points for admission to the respective JCs”

It means you child can gets another 2 points deduction, on top of the 4 points deducted. It means your daughter score is now 8. However, it is best for you to call NYJC or JJC (both have CLEP) to confirm whether they recognise your daughter score as 10 or 8 since she is still not accepted to the CLEP programme.

2) If your child is serious in doing CLEP, I would recommend to put down NYJC as 1st choice and JJC as 2nd choice. I think getting a chance into TJC is low, but if you want to take a risk (since each student has 12 choices), you can put TJC as 1st choice instead.

I cannot get any info on NYJC’s CLEP subject combination, but below is JJC’s CLEP subject combination.
http://www.jurongjc.moe.edu.sg/sites/ju ... 202014.pdf

Assuming your DD prefers Science Stream, she can only choose LM04 or LM05, ie H1 Maths and one H2 Science. You may want to discuss with her whether it will affects her choice of programmes in University.

3) If DD decided not to study CLEP, then she has score of 10. No harm putting JCs with cop of 8 or 9 as first few choices, but be prepared she will not get into these JCs. The next tier JCs will be those with score between 10 to 14, which left Catholic JC, Jurong JC, Pioneer JC, Serangoon JC, Tampines JC. Cannot really say which JC is good, but for science I would choose Serangoon JC. For Arts I will choose Serangoon JC, Tampines JC or Catholic JC. Not familiar with Jurong JC, Pioneer JC but saw a posting from one JJC student (or ex student) recommending people to consider his school.

Actually, in JC, I believe student play a bigger role in his/her results. Some students will not be bothered on which JC to go to. If you look at Pioneer JC, they even have students with “2” point entering their Science stream, where “2” point can easily put a student in any of the top 5 JCs. Serangoon JC and Jurong JC lowest point is “5”. Also, even Yishun JC (one of the lowest COP) has produced students with outstanding A level results before.

When I choose a JC for my niece, I look at their subject combinations, whether they have the combination she wanted. Each JC has its own set of subject combinations. Also, different JCs have different criteria to allow students to do 4H2, 3H2/1H1 or 4H2/1H1. You may want to consider these as well.

Cheers.

At junior college level, your child is progressing and developing into a young adult. These 2 years will be the time for preparation to enter university. It will definitely be a hectic and busy time so time is of the essence as well.

Looking at the above conditions, it would be better to base your choice with a balance of:

1) academics,
2) personal development and
3) ease of travelling
4) engaging your child in the decision making
5) school culture

Have you or your child visited any of the Open Houses of the junior colleges? It might give a better overall picture of the school and its programmes.

I agree with the earlier posts that choosing based on the Cut-Off Points will help increase your chance of securing a place in a college that is closer to your results. Once you have narrowed into those few colleges, it will be the opportunities for development that will influence your choice, such as:

1) strength of CCA (to build her curricular vitae for possible scholarship application after A levels)
2) culture of school (peers support, availability of teachers for consultations after school, strong school identity and bonding)
3) feedback from her seniors who have studied in these junior colleges (very often, the present students' words are worth more than anyone's as they have the experience first-hand)
4) speaking to her secondary school teachers for advice (i was an ex-MOE teacher and current tutor. I know how much assurance my words can have at times to a lost student)

Good luck with your child's selection! Do update us how it goes! =)

Can anyone enlightened me on how the JC admission is done ? Is it based on merit that is someone who has a lower score despite what choices will be given first priority to get in. For e.g., if student has 7 points, and choose TJC Science as first choice and ACJC as second choice, if TJC cut off is 5 points, then will he lose out from ACJC if he put as second choice but someone with 8 points put as first choice.

Yes it is purely based on merit. Which means they will allocate slots for a certain score first before moving on to the score with more points.
