I think what is happening could be this. Only my guess.

Some schools (say A to J), from 30 over years ago till now, have not changed how cca allocation works,
Some other schools (say K to Z), from 30 years ago till now, also have not changed how cca allocation works.

So if based on A then and A now, same.
But if based on K then and A now, then we see the difference.

Am I making sense?
Very cheem. You speak English much?
My guess is to compare apple with apple.. like eg. 2nd generation going to different 'class' of school?

The other thing is, I'm not sure why nowadays there's a strict quota on CCA slots. In our generation, wasn't it the case that you could join any CCA you wanted. Now, the kids audition, go for trials, rank 5-6 choices and may end up with none of their choices. I heard the CCA head explain this in terms of demand and supply. But my thoughts on that, if there isn't a demand, then close that CCA down, and channel more resources to the more popular CCA. Is it wrong to have a bigger dance troupe, or band, or choir. Can't sec schools have a recreational sports team separate from a competitive one? Maybe I'm out of touch. Would be happy to hear from other more experienced parents.
Even in previous generations, it wasn't unlimited. I do remember having to fill in preferences for CCAs and there was a quota even years back.

In addition to the other very valid points, the proposal to shut down a CCA can also cause administrative issues. What happens to those students who are already in those CCAs? Even a phase-out system may have issues as they will not be able to compete, eg if they are in Sec4 and happen to be the last yr of the CCA (no Sec3s).

Besides, do you remember the parents' petition and media hoo-ha when Montfort tried to shut down a rugby team? Pretty sure schools don't want to have to deal with this kind of publicity.

It would be tough to try to fulfill every parents' wants and keep opening up and closing down CCAs as the trends change. I'm sure after a World Cup, soccer interest would be high; same situation in swimming after Schooling won an Olympic gold. But they can't just increase big quotas, hire coaches, then subsequently shrink it down again when the next big trend comes along.

Hi, I just came here to express my thoughts on CCA selection in secondary school. No agenda.

I don't know when it became the norm for seniors to interview Sec 1s when they join a CCA. I think there are pros and cons to this. My kid says having seniors there gave Sec 1s a feel of the sub culture in the CCA. She decided against trying for some CCAs cos she didn't think the kids there were her type, so it helped in the decision-making process. But it was also the case that kid was rejected by some CCAs after trial, partly, she suspects, because she wasn't their type. Cos in terms of musical/performance ability, she was a stronger contender than those that got in. Anyway, this is her feeling.

If I think your dd is in the same school as my gals, then I think it is not entirely true that the selection of Y1 is based on seniors' selection only. I haven't heard of a CCA that has such a practice although CCA leaders may be able to exert some influence. At least for my 3 gals in diff CCAs, all their CCAs selection were decided by the coaches/CCA teachers though one of my gal is a CCA leader.

On the quota, cannot be helped. If everyone wants to go for popular CCAs, there will be no one left to explore the non-popular CCAs and that is why UG is made a compulsory choice in one of 6 choices. It is not so easy to close down a CCA if it is not popular. Just least year, 3 CCAs were closed down. The affected gals were so upset and petitioned but the decision was final. It was really painful emotionally for the affected as one of the CCA was rather promising and a medal winner. I do not know if schools need to offer a min number of CCAs in relation to the number of students so perhaps that is a factor too. There also must be optimal size per CCA because there are only 3 badminton courts, 2 dance rooms or 1 netball/basketball court, just to share some examples.

Hi, this thread got pushed down the active threads list and I forgot about it. Just came back to say my kid is enjoying her CCA. So yippee. I checked with her again and she did say for some CCA interviews, there were teachers present, but they sat to one side and looked bored and were there mainly to sign the attendance sheet. Well, that's what she told me.

Yes indeed, times have changed. And maybe I was in a small-ish secondary school. Really, no one ever had issue joining their CCA of choice. That was my experience.

I can say that in our school, the CCA Head has been helping kids find a CCA that they don't mind joining if they weren't allocated any of their choices. My kids has a few friends that were "TBC" when the CCA allocation came out. It's a bit demoralising, but it looks like it will work out in the end.

Qn regarding CCA selection .
I understand the kids have to go through CCAs trials nowadays then list their choices and the will be allocated one CCA which may not be on their list . What’s the process like?
Is this sequence correct ?
1) go for trials and selection tests of CCAs they are interested in
2) they are informed if they passed the tests
3) list choices according to preference
4) wait for allocation

I think more or less in this format with small variations. For my daughter's school 2 years ago, this was the schedule...

1. CCA fair for sec1 to see, talk, play
2. CCA trial n audition dates/ timing released
3. Choose which ones to go try out
4. If immediately talent spotted, may get a form to fill in. It's like "CCA CO"
5. If interested in that CCS, no need to go for more trials. Just submit that form.
6. They are free to go for more trials and potentially get more CO forms.
7. After end of trials n auditions, submit your 5-6 choices with at least one UG then wait for results of CCA posting

Hi parents,

May I know under the leaps system, is it a requirement for the child to win so that it can be included in the points? Or just participating in the competition counts? Thanks!

May I ask if this LEAPS program is useful for the IP track students? How relevant thanks!
