Hi, I would recommend 2) Lower Secondary Science Understanding Biology, Chemistry & Physics, by GLM (3books).
They have good notes and questions that ranges from basic to intermediate. It is a good guidebook as the questions are not as challenging.

However, based on my experience as an ex-school teacher and tutor for many years, the contents that every school teach for lower secondary school is different. Hence, you may not be able to find a 'perfect' book for them unlike upper secondary whereby teachers follow strictly to the MOE syllabus.

If your child has any issues, it is good to advise them to seek help from their school teacher and request more revision questions from their school teachers. Find out from their school teachers how they can revise for their sciences.

I sent my child for tuition and the centre is also using GLM for the tuition notes.. so i wonder how else to supplement the materials coz with all the info, results r still quite bad.

I am new to the secondary school environment. A few days ago, we purchased the textbooks and there were 2 volumes of science entitled 'All About Science', labelled as 'lower secondary' instead of 'secondary 1'. Does anyone have any idea how many topics are covered in secondary 1 express science ? If there are 2 volumes, bought before the child's start of secondary school, does it mean that 1 of the volumes could be for secondary 2 ? Though there may be variations on the topics between schools, the number of topics should not be very different right ? Thanks folks.

In secondary school, science is divided into biology, chemistry and physics.

In lower secondary, the students cover the basics of each of these.

MoE has a guideline on the topics to cover. However, in my experience, schools vary in the topics covered, the sequence and even the depth to which they cover the topics. The teaching is organised in different ways in different schools. For example, in some schools, the basics of Light is taught in Sec 2 and re-visited in Sec 3 in more depth for those taking Physics. In some schools, where nearly all students take Physics in Sec 3, they may teach all that Sec students need to know for Light by Sec 2 and only briefly revise it in Sec 3.

Some schools have thick pure science textbooks on their book list. Some of these textbooks are good for students until Sec 4.
Some schools have very generic science reference books on their book list... and some teachers don't even refer to them ...

The best guide on the topics that will be covered in S1 and S2 is from the child's science teacher in school. I always recommend that the child/parent ask the school teacher ....
