My daughter is not able to take A Math in Sec 3, she was given POA. Infact, she could not meet the required marks by just 2 to 3 points. Is ther any way she can take A Math privately? Would it be recognised in JCs? Please help.

Hi Bounty,
Without Add Maths, JC H2 Maths will be a real struggle...differentiation and integration form a huge part of H2 Maths and the basics are taught in Add. Maths.

So, yes, let her do A Maths privately, I think she should be able to take it as private candidate. Pls call MOE to confirm.

no she cannot. School candidates are not allowed to register as private candidates.

A Maths is easy to study in school but not easy to do it privately due to the need for indepth practice and learning. High level maths techniques and treatments are taught in Add Maths such as logarithm, further trigo, binomial equations, differentiation and integration, kinematics etc which E maths only student will not understand without proper coaching and guidance.

Thank you for all your replies and guidance. I did call MOE and they said that I should register through the school and do the Course privately....
I cannot register as a private candidate. Yes, I don't know how much she can be coached privately...
Please do let me know of other solutions. Thank you so very much.

Sorry to tell you this but from what I have seen many times. Many students who take A Maths privately will drop out soon due to lack of time and practise.

Okay, so if she does not do A Math and she goes to Poly to do a Science stream, how can she enroll into University after that? I heard that upon completing Poly, students can join 3rd yr into NUS. Is this true? I am speaking about courses like Pharmacy, Biomedical Science, etc.

You can refer to all the polytechnics websites for such info. From what I know, usually they skipped a few modules, at most year 1 in uni. Haven't heard of skipping 2 years of uni.
