I suspect Qn printed wrongly. RHS should be (1- tan x) /(1 + tanx).

Here are the skills involved:
1) change sec x to 1/cosx ,
2) change (cosx)^2 - 1 to -(sinx)^2
3) factorise (sinx)^2+(cosx)^2+2sinxcosx to (sinx+cosx)^2.
4) apply tanx = sinx / cosx
Cheers!

Hi,
I'm not sure if this is an appropriate thread to post this question, mod please remove if it is not appropriate.
My son is struggling with his A Maths. His A Maths grade for SA1 is 12.5. I am considering letting him drop the subject. My question is - how important is A Maths for entrance to JC Science stream?
He is also weak in his E Maths, 42.5 for SA1. I'm thinking if he drops A Maths, he can spend more time to improve on his E Maths and other subjects. Any advice or thoughts will be greatly appreciated.
TIA.

Is your son in Sec 3 or 4?
If it's Sec 3, then there is still time to turn the tide.
In terms of dropping Maths, my view is that Maths remain the easiest subject to score well. Even if a student is not blessed with innate ability to 'master' Maths, he can still do reasonably well with diligence and practice.
Feel free to contact me if you need any help or advice.
Regards,
Eric

I had a Sec 4 student (few years back), wanted to drop A Maths in O-Level. Well, his mother only engage me around March after he failed both his maths.
I encouraged him to continue with his A Maths, as some of the topics in E Maths will appear in A Maths with more details.
Ended up he got a A2 in E Math and B4 in A Math.
Well, if he is in Sec 3, then there are still time for him to catch up.
Make the decision only when the teacher advised him to drop the subject.
