Hi mummies,

My boy is going to secondary 1 next year. I have no idea about secondary school stuff at all.

Can you advise me what are the popular tuition centers for secondary school kids?

Thank you.

I recommend that you let your child get through the first term's tests before deciding if your child needs tuition. Let him tell you if he needs help. Tuition can be beneficial but it takes up additional time and resources which could have been put to better use self studying. Many secondary school teachers are also quite willing to give their students additional help if they ask. Teach your child to approach their teachers often. Keep in touch with their teachers to find out the progress of your child. Let them tell you is tuition is necessary for any specific subject.

My daughter was Sec 3 in 2015 and she did very badly for her end of year exams in E and A maths even though she had home tuition. (E maths 52 and A maths 40) In 2016 I send her to Apt tuition centre in Upper Serangoon because my colleague recommended me. She said her son improved alot after going to that tuition centre. So I cancel the 1 on 1 home tuition and enroll her E math, A math and Chemistry.

Even though the location was not very convenient but because of the recommendation I decided to give it a try. Also when I called them, the teacher I spoke to was very helpful. The centre even have a policy that if my daughter didn't improve they will refund the tuition fees. I never heard of any other centre that is so confident that they can offer this. My daughter liked the teachers there and found the lessons very helpful.

This year 2017 when she got back her result, she got A2 for E maths and chemistry, B3 for A maths. It was a really good improvement. She and I were very happy with the results and she got into her first choice course in Temasak Poly. I highly recommend any parent to try out with Apt tuition. Although the price is not the cheapest, it is worth the money. Plus they offer the refund if there is no improvement which I think tells alot about the quality of the teaching and there is no harm trying. I have already recommended the tuition centre to a few friends and their children are in the centre and have given good reviews about it. You can google and find their website. The teacher's name is Gabriel

It was such a relief to know of such a wonderful tuition centre. Thanks alot for recommending. BTW, Mr Gabriel was one of the tutor teaching Math subj only? Do you know of any tutor in this centre that you know of good in tutoring Pure Chem and Pure Bio. My child is sitting for O level this year and she is very weak in Pure Chem and Pure Bio and would like to register her in this centre asap. Thank you so much for your kind reply =)

That depends on what your child need from tuition.

Some need rapid improvement in short time, some need to maintain result in high standard. While some just want to make sure they really spend time on that subject by putting in tuition class.

So different tuition centres may meet different needs. Take my DD for example, her physics is a bit weak, and needs improvement in short time. I purposely find a tuition centre in which the physics tutor is very experienced ex RGS teacher and class is conducted in very small group. They emphasize on tuition quality and of course tuition fee is not cheap compared with other popular centres but still reasonable. And the result so far so good.

So you must have an idea what your child really need before looking for a tuition centre.

Have you considered Nicklebee Tutors?
It's a very popular center specializing in Math and Science/Chemistry run by Mr Zhou and Ms Chen. They have branches at both Bishan and Punggol.
My children are taking math lessons with Mr Zhou and I find his tutoring to be very effective. Perhaps you could contact them at http://www.nicklebeetutors.com
