Anyone recently holidayed in New Zealand? Understand that Christchurch is now undergoing reconstruction after the earthquakes, is it still safe to go there?

What abt North Islands like Auckland and Rotorua etc? are they affected by the earthquakes? Heard that there is nothing much to see in North Islands...

Never been to New Zealand, have done some reading on it but would like to hear some real-life holiday experiences there. Thanks!

I think only Christchurch is badly damaged.

Flights are operating normally

But all other parts of the South Island are still beautiful. Southern summer with long day light is really great !

Just need to be aware and conscious of earth quake evacuation procedures of still 'afraid'. Last went there in Dec 2009.

Of all places in NZ, I love Queenstown best. But North Island isn't too bad either. Make a trip to Lake Taupo and Huka Falls. It's lovely and picturesque. I love their fresh water beach at Taupo too. You can try Bungy jumping there if you're game enough.

Rotorua is nice too. Sheep shearing, Maori Village, Geysers, funballs etc. You can also catch a day trip or overnight trip to Bay Island. It's awesome and you can catch the dolphins.

If you are staying for a long period, you may want to go to Wellington for the museums. You can either take a shuttle flight or drive there, but do make more stops for rest as the drive there takes 9 hours.

In Auckland city itself, do visit the Sky Tower and if you're game enough too, try the Sky Tower jump. For the less adventurous, then do the walk.

Enjoy your trip!

Forgot to respond with regards to the quakes. Auckland and Rotorua should be safe from the quakes, but you may experience quakes in Wellington. To those staying there, it's very normal to experience slight shakes now and then.

Yes there're lovely resorts there, both Ski Resorts and Beach Resorts. Try skiing at Mount Ruapehu in the North Island. It's really fun.

Thanks Happy Mama for the sharing! I may give South Island a skip now becos of the quakes. Is 6-7 days enough for North Island if we are just going to Auckland, Rotorua and Lake Taupo, Huka Falls and maybe Bay Island?
