I have been to Shanghai twice
I didn't book in advance for the G train to hangzhou and suzhou
Just be there early to buy the tickets of your preferred timing and have a plan B in case you can't buy for that timing

There are 4 main train stations in SHG: Shanghai, Shanghai South, Shanghai West and Shanghai Hongqiao. There are trains to Changzhou from these stations but at different timing. You have to make sure you get to the right one to take the train that you want. You can use ctrip to help in your planning.

Train takes about an hour to reach your destination. You don't have to buy ahead but it is recommended (you can also buy tickets when you arrived in SHG). Always try to go for the G train first (train number starting with G) as these are the high speed trains with less stops in between (and they are always the first to be sold out).

As for food, if you are looking for good food, follow the number 1 Singaporean rule: Go for the one with the longest queue. On the other hand, if only for waiting, head for the one with the least people. When all else fails, there's always 麦当劳 or 星巴克.

Mid-March is ok, as the next PH is Qing Ming Festival in Apr.

For 5 pax, of which 3 are young children, you may book in advance if you want to ensure you're seated together as a family. Normally for a) smaller groups or groups with older teens; b) LONGER journeys; or c) Second Class seats, people just purchase on the spot. SH to CZ is less than 1 hr by G train.

There are about 5 or 6 passenger stations in SH: SH North, SH West, SH South, etc...But, the stations serving your route are SH Hongqiao and SH Station@闸北. Go online to check your preferred timings. Some take longer cos they stop at every timbaktu station. Train types are diff too. Some are HSR, some are normal rail.

Don't expect fantastic F&B at train stations where you can lounge for 2 hours. But there'll be a few fast food stations with free wifi and convenience stores. There's ZERO need to wait in rail stations if you plan your itinerary properly. For instance, book in advance, or purchase the next train upon arrival.

You can always buy instant noodles onboard the train, or tapao tea leaves eggs, McDs or sausages to munch on the train. For first class, they may serve Chinese tea, coffee, water and magazines/papers.
