dd & friends have been discussing abt taking up temp jobs after o levels this year. Does anyone has suggestions on the type of jobs for 16-yr olds? The typical jobs are waitressing, event promoters/helpers, cashiers, data entry clerks. Are there any other more interesting ones (as in enriching or fun learning experience)? Are working at the theme parks like WWW or universal studios or zoo advisable? Appreciate any feedback on the pros & cons.

Or, just simply share your dd/ds' experience here? TIA!

But its only 2 months before JC term starts for those who plan to go to JC. I am not sure about Poly.

Isnt that very short to hold a temp job?

Year end is the peak season for many industries, esp retail & F&B. I have seen temp jobs advertised in ST classifieds sometimes for a couple of days for exhibitions too.

Giving tuition...hm... think she'll want to get away from books for a while after o's. Think her holiday job experience is more for life experience than anything else but thanks for the suggestion anyway.

I guess most students will go for sales job in h&m, uniqlo etc or waitress jobs in kio, Starbucks, hotels, restaurants. I don't mind h&m cos can get staff discounts  .

Dd has lots of things to do after o level like sleep and sleep and sleep :snooze:  . Go out with friends and her little brother + get involved with a charity. So her temp job has to be of flexible hours and not cause inconvenience to company should she resign.

I won't recommend tuition cos it is a waste of time for the parents and child who have to look for a new tutor again 2 months later.

I must say working at uss, zoo etc could be quite interesting.

My nephew used to help to set up the music equipments for concerts and events. Got the job thru friends.

Ushers in theatres also not bad....can see "STARS" and watch free performances.

Yeah, dd now thinks she may not have much time to do holiday jobs now, cos she's got to catch up on her manga, running man, korean dramas & go kinokuniya ...

Think the best is to sign her up @ sgcares to do some ad hoc volunteering work.

My kids originally wanted to take holiday jobs. Then they decided on volunteer roles instead. I was happy to support that change, as they learnt a lot about how to care for those who have different backgrounds.

I will actually recommend let your child do those "menial" jobs like warehouse, F&B etc. Looking back, I feel that those jobs really humbled me and made me value my education a lot more, because I know how tough those jobs were. In addition, when your child grows up into a successful individual, he/she will still treat the service staff with respect.

I agree! I did an office job for two months as a student and was DETERMINED to avoid such jobs at all costs in future! Omg, mind numbing robotic, dead in the middle of nowhere. My jobs after graduating have always been much more my cup of tea and where people are actually energetic and interesting. Phew!
