It's mainly beach. So if you are looking for a beach resort to laze around with your kid, it'll be ok. Nothing else. Danang is an industrial city by the coast. There are some nice beach hotels. You can visit Hoi An, My Son, Hue from there but your kid probably won't be able to appreciate the ruins at My Son. My advice is stay in Hoi An instead of Danang. It is a smaller town and much more interesting. Besides the beach, there is the UNESCO heritage old town in Hoi An which is quaint and pretty. More food choices there too.

Da Nang isn't really interesting. It is very much a typical Vietnamese city. However, if your intention is to plant yourself in one of the resorts along the coast, the city probably doesn't really matter.

There are a number of nice resorts in Danang. While I like Fusion Maia, there isn't anything to entertain your 18 months old (same for the other resorts). That said, your 18 months old would probably be well entertain with just the pool or the beach. I doubt he/she is old enough to even notice anything else.

Hoi An is more for the adults. A UNESCO town with plenty of quaint cafes and eateries. It is a great place to hang around and watch the world goes by. And if the men can spare the time, go tailor a few suits/shirts/pants - affordable and extremely well done. The ladies may want to consider tailoring an ao dai.
