fun, safe, and inexpensive ideas for holidays

School terms keep kids in school and parents sane. Holidays can be boring to kids if they are left alone. Discuss vacation ideas and how to make good use of the free time for both children and adults.

Hello Kiasu parents,
My friends and I have been arranging a list of inexpensive activities for all ages that can be learnt quickly (1 day, weekend, or max 2 weekends). Some of our findings are here. Hope you find it useful. Feel free to add to this list or to furnish more details.

1. Learn Origami/balloon sculpture - plenty of free/cheap course in library/Community Centres. Even a novice can learn a design or two in an hour.
2. Learn Juggling - http://www.juggling.org/~singapore/ You can learn juggling for free here. A weekend of practice will get you firmly started.
3. Rubik Cube - plenty of programs on youtube.
4. Gardening courses - plenty of courses (1 day) available in Botanical Gardens (www.sbg.org.sg)
5. Emergency preparation/first aid - http://www.scdf.gov.sg/content/scdf_int ... /cepp.html
6. Phonetic code - useful when talking to travel agents. http://airtravel.about.com/od/airtravel ... phabet.htm

Hi,
I visit the radio exhibition in National Museum. Kids could see the gramophone records and gigantic radios from the past. Also some activities for kids. All in all a fun place to spend the afternoon. Do let me know if you have any other thoughts. Other parents may consider visiting this exhibition one of these days during the June hols...
