Travel: Australia - Cairns

School terms keep kids in school and parents sane. Holidays can be boring to kids if they are left alone. Discuss vacation ideas and how to make good use of the free time for both children and adults.

Let's kick start a discussion on Cairns, the gateway to two UNESCO World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef and Wet Tropics.

ahhhh, cairns...

brings back sweet memories for me.

i've been a couple of times in my 20s as i really love the beach culture.

toyed with the idea of revisiting but logistically, not so easy now. SQ no longer flies there and that means having to transit via local domestic.

did a quick estimate expenditure check and it's really really costly. :siao: just a day trip out with the family to the great barrier reef would set us back a few hundred. (wonder why money was hardly ever an issue when we were younger :? )

SilkAir flies direct to Cairns.

GBR. Kuranda. Daintree. Port Douglas. And the yummy crepes at the night market. I want to go back to Cairns, too!

Yah, SilkAir flies direct to Cairns now. I took their direct red-eye flight to Cairns but had to come back via Darwin though.

FNQ has a number of outstanding beach and the rainforest was pretty awesome too. Had a good time exploring places like the Daintree rainforest and Mossman Gorge.

If going to GBR with kids, might want to avoid the stinger season. Enjoy!

The summer months. Not sure of the exact period. One of my trips to GBR was in December. The guides gave a short briefing. We were told that the chances of encountering stingers at the GBR is very slim. Don't let the stingers spoil your trip

Kuranda was amazing. My second time to Cairns (last was over 10 years ago) and I still love it.

I have fun exploring the Kuranda village. Getting there via the Kuranda Scenic Railway and return via the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway was a big hit with my kids.
