Using ATM card in Japan

Postby sparks » Mon Nov 28, 2016 3:08 pm

Hi, I just read from tripadvisor that it's quite advisable to draw cash from ATM in Japan (quite favourable rates). Is anyone doing this when travelling to Japan? I just checked with POSB & they say they charge a fee of S$5 for each overseas withdrawal. If the exchange rate is similar to Spore or better, then I can just carry some emergency cash with me & draw yen from the ATM or pay using ATM when needed, and lessen use of credit cards (some merchants charge extra for using cc). Any advice is appreciated, thanks!

If you do arrive in Japan without yen, you can quite easily exchange currency at the airport or withdraw yen from an ATM in the airport.
It’s not worth waiting until you get into Tokyo or Kyoto (or another city) to try and find a currency-exchange center. Some banks and hotels in Japanese cities can exchange currency, but it’s not as easy to find currency exchanges in Japan as it is in many other countries.

Thanks for your replies.

Have read more about it & looks quite commonly done by travellers. It's best to carry emergency yen & change upon arrival at airport. Rates are abt same at airport & in city. Am staying very near Shinjuku/Ueno station & so convenient to draw from ATMs at post office & 7-11s. Can't wait!
