With baggage being charged by the kg on a number of airlines, those bags are going to cost you  Samsonite often have trade-in promos from time to time. You can keep a look out for them.
My opinion exactly! I've been trying to get rid of them, but my husband is very "sayang" since they cost so much, have lasted so long, and are still in good condition. We bought them in the '80s and '90s when he had to travel quite often, carry expensive gifts for the bosses/VIPs he travelled with, and needed uncreased clothes for meetings and events (and weight wasn't an issue). But that's not our lifestyle now! I think I'll put myself on their mailing list for future trade-in promotions.

yah. must keep for trade in promotion.
only buy samsonite! lol. its the best luggage i ever used and i used quite a lot.
my father loves rimowa though, big fan.
but i stick to my samsonite. haha
Not all Samsonite luggages are built the same...

The Oyster is "legendary". You can throw it around or abuse it, and it would stay the same. These bags are built to last and can be a heartache if one have to throw them away (I can empathise with slmkhoo's husband). That said, if slmkhoo wants to get rid of them, there's a decent market for these on eBay.

The newer Samsonite luggages are rubbish though. They are just part of the modern executive must-have accessory and look good only if you have no intention of checking them in. Put them through the racetrack in the airport or some rough handling by the baggage handlers, they will turn out to be just as shitty as some of the cheaper brands  The ABS/polycarbonate and 4 wheels design of many modern bags probably isn't helping their durability.

Personally, I would suggest Eminent luggages. Made in Taiwan, doesn't have instant brand recognition or look atas, and doesn't carry the price point of the branded luggages.

The Oysters are truly sturdy, but also heavy! I can't see us using them anymore as we don't travel with valuables, and we are getting older and less able to heave them around. Ebay? Maybe we should try.

I have the 'legendary' oyster too, or rather, it's my dh's first branded luggage bought for his first overseas posting. He doesn't want to sell it as it's got sentimental value. It's now holding my ds' precious baby toys and stowed in my storeroom.

the Oyster is not easy to lug. Well, at least not easy for tall travellers. I dislike the Oyster as I need to safeguard the tiny key. I prefer luggage with ZERO keys.

Try getting something with the TSA lock as most international airports do open your luggage to inspect.

Get something light. I've 4 polycarbonate Samsonite Cosmolite, in addition to my 4 Rimowas.

The only place where TSA locks are needed is in the US. All other airports in he world don't have the TSA master key. Hence, if you want to lock your luggage (outside the USA), you can use a TSA lock, or any other lock of your choice. It makes no difference.

Not saying it's also a requirement for non-usa airports. But hving one is good as it does facilitate airports' random but hassle free inspection of your baggage in the backroom...

I SERIOUSLY believe major gateways and hubs in EU have the master key or means to open your TSA lock to check for suspicious items inside your luggage. Rimowa is made in Germany n their baggage come with TSA. I was all prepared for Frankfurt airport to open up my Rimowa to check ;p

https://community.ricksteves.com/travel ... -in-europe

Good to move with the times. Why stay so backward and invest in an old school bag and add an extra TSA padlock, when TSA luggage have been flooding the market for several years? It's like buying a 3G phone when 4G phones are already out.

Unfortunately, what you believe isn't necessary the case. No other airports in the world, including all the major EU hubs and SIN, apart from those in US or US protectorate, have the TSA master key. TSA is a US-specific requirement (because the Americans can) and if security in these other airports would like to open up your bags for inspection, they will either page for you (rarely happen anymore) or break it open. Don't place too much faith in FRA. They will break open the RIMOWA, TSA or no TSA, if they think it's worthy for a physical / visual inspection.

The comments in the link talked about NA-EU vv traffic, where TSA inspection would be possible. Aside, I think most of them have no idea what they are talking about

The 3G / 4G isn't an appropriate analogy as they are all interoperable. TSA is like a unique system that no one else, apart from Americans, uses. Some luggage makers charges you extras for TSA luggage, which is totally unnecessary for travellers who rarely visit US. The world has yet to come up with a ISO standard travel locking device yet (and no one would trust the rest of the world with the master key). If you need a lock on your luggage and prefer to buy a TSA luggage, that's fine. At the non-US airports, it will just be treated as any other locked luggage.

Thanks for the info. But I discovered that the same items are available at the discounted price on Lazada, without any trade-in! So that means the old bags are really worthless? Will Samsonite just throw them away?

Thanks for pointing it out.
We really need much more discernment these days.
I would give samsonite a miss after reading some other reviews that the old samsonite are durable but not the new ones.
