Teeth Grinding

Post by Poonie » Mon Oct 13, 2008 5:34 pm

Hi

My 6-year old grinds her teeth everynight during her sleep. Checked the internet and it says they may outgrow this habit as they get older.

Can anyone whose child have been through this share with me if your child outgrew it without treatment?

My daughter and son used to grind their teeth too. Not anymore. So I guess they outgrew it. I used to grind my teeth too... but well into my adulthood. My teeth has been so abused that my dentist threatened to make me wear guards at night.

They say it's due to stress. So I guess it depends on individuals.

I used to grind teeth when I was younger. I saw a doctor and was told that it was stress induced. So I was told to de-stress before sleeping with activities such as reading, surfing net, watching TV etc

Maybe you all can try it ...

my 6yr old daughter used to grind her teeth rather frequently when she's asleep, but she's stopped doing that for quite a while already (at least a yr or so).

my trusty dentist says it's normal for children to do this and it doesn't do any significant damage, but it's bad for adults to be doing it.

Thank you all for your replies. It's a consolation to know that there is a possibility that she will out-grow it.

So sorry I could not send a thank you note cause I was having log-in problems for a few days.

My wife and daughter do it occasionally. Used to be more often. I also think it's because of stress.

On a hunch, since it could have psychological reasons, I tried an experiment. Whenever my wife did it (and woke me up) I would tell her not to do it - she's still asleep but I know her brain is listening. Curiously this seems to work. Unless it's just coincidental.

Since otherwise there is no direct/active solution to this, no harm trying. :)

Cool... I'll try it on my wife tonight... "Stop maxxing my credit cards... stop maxxing my credit cards..." If I survive my attempt at cutting household expenses through subliminal suggestions, I'll let you all know about it in a short while.

Thanks. I invest an average of about $1500 on my teeth per year :faint: . My dentist look to me to pay for his year-end ski trips.

My son grinds his teeth a lot too, almost every night. Recently, dh checked with a friend who is into TCM, she gave the same reason that it was stressed-induced. We were advised to cut down ds eating too much just before he goes to bed. She also recommended supplement - Cod liver oil.
