Hi, my son 9 yrs old has been diagnosed with Tourette syndrome and OCD. He has these kind of symptoms:
1. Vocal and motor tics
2. Involuntary body movement, jerking on arms, legs and tummy
3. Touching things repetitively
4. Dressing and undressing repetitively
5. Flipping books for few times
6. Washing hands repetitively
7. Opening and closing doors repetitively
8. Checking on things must be in order
9. Lack of concentration in school
10. Worry too much
11. Anxious over minor things

Has anyone have come across these? Any support group for these disorders? What should I do to help him cope with his anxiety?
Singapore school is too competitive and stressful for him, any suggestion whether he should be pulled out from mainstream program?
Please advise...

hi there

I found these 2 webbies.

http://ticcare.wordpress.com/about-tour ... singapore/

You can also ask abt support groups if your son is seeing doctors from National Neuroscience Institute. It should have a support group for patients too.

I suppose you should speak to his doctors and see a therapist/counsellor who's familiar with TS and OCD. Medication and behv therapy can help to some extent. I think the members of TS caregroup will be able to advise you regarding how to handle school pressures & get school support.

If your son does not have learning difficulties, I feel he should stay in mainstream school which has supportive teachers.

I'll send you a PM later.

take care!

Ping

Dear Ping,

Thank you very much for your reply. I will certainly contact the support group in Singapore.

Meanwhile he will be having his brain therapy tomorrow. Just cross my fingers that it will help his condition.

Hi fluffy2307

My friend has a daughter that suffers from tics/ muscle twitches. But don't think she's diagnosed with Tourette's tho.

I recall her telling me that she had her daughter tested for food allergies and based on the results, started to manage her diet very strictly. By eliminating certain food types, she managed to minimise the tics. It was not totally eradicated but at least it was not as bad as before. I think she also puts her daughter on enzyme therapy as well.

Good luck in his brain therapy tomorrow

Hi,

I happen to chanced upon this post. May I ask about the brain therapy? Is it neuro-feedback? Could you share more? Will it helps in both the vocal and motor tics?

Hi! First of all, I don't know if this really applies to your case (being in Singapore I assume there is a mixture of religions there), but my sister's daughter was diagnosed (a few years ago) with a rare case of OCD; at first they didn't know the type, but about a year later, they named it "religious" OCD (here is a bit more information on it). The point is, she lives in Spain, and there are strict norms, concepts and canonical "rules" inherited from Catholicism here that are at times a bit hard for a child to cope with, especially when he or she suffers from anxiety, OCD or is simply prone to social stresses. I would advice checking what type of OCD it is, and working on it from there. Maybe a therapist can help; my niece went to a lot of specialists with little luck until she met with a Psychoanalyst that is still treating her with more than acceptable results! Best of luck to you, and a bunch of blessings with that issue... Remind your child the power of God, that Christ is always there for him/her, and that no matter what, it will all be alright (well, that last one may be a bit more directed at you :hugs: ).
