So, for families who are in need of quick claims for Travel Insurance, Health (medical, PA or others) esp for bereaved families if Life payout, the wait can be long, long time, making you & family members justify & stressed out. Track record very poor, unlike AIA & NTUC Income, AIA premium more expensive than NTUC. So, today, NTUC Income has been popular.

Read other's experience with AVIVA:-

Not sure if they've improved after digitalizing their claim processes :-

Then again, for most of us alr with other insurers, it's not an option as we age due pre-existing conditions once we switch insurers.

Anyone with recent experience can share?
Ok good sharing.

Hi, all,

We are a family of three and currently financially not fully stable yet. Need advice if it is ok for us to just base on the automatic medishield cover for my 6 year old?

For those seeking to get or upgrade their health insurance, you can check COMPARISON OF INTEGRATED SHIELD PLANS here.

It is impt to purchase Integrated HealthShield early when u’ve no or few medical conditions as you’ll never know how it’ll relieve one burden when serious illness strikes.

Even for those elderlies who are covered under MediShield and Pioneer subsidies, which does not cover pre- & post- outpatient & follow-up expenses. Initially, my BILs & SILs did not ustand & see the benefits of purchasing such insurance thinking it’s a waste of money preferring to think the govt had alr covered everything in MediShield & our elderlies hv Pioneer subsidy benefits. DH & I adamant to keep paying for the premiums on our own, w/o burdening any of them. We now see how it relieves the family fr heavy medical costs.

My FIL had been in-/out hospital, majority of hospital expenses covered under the common MediShield and Pioneer subsidies, but he had so many follow-up checks due to multiple complications that comes with old age & failing function of kidney, heart, lungs, etc the pre- & post- outpatient expenses thankfully fully paid under the Integrated MediShield we purchased years before these conditions starts.

So, for those of us who are not Pioneers & not covered with such subsidies, it’s impt to ensure we are covered before illness exclude us fr being covered. Rmbr to get insurance cover before cut-off age of 75, at least alleviate heavy medical costs. There are other costs we can insure for such as engaging maid expenses.

medishield is totally not enough!!! Only B/C class wards are given, and it's not full coverage too

Lol. If you are in the hospital, it make little difference between A and B wards.

Putting all other benefits (choice of doctor, shorter waiting time etc) of having a A shield plan aside, one of the main benefits so far I could see is to have a single ward for

1. a young child that a parent can sleep in together

2. an old and dying elderly with family member wish to accompany him/her at night.

Without an A ward, such arrangements are quite tough (the caregiver, if allows to accompany overnight, would have to sit on the chair for hours).

I witnessed both (my grand niece due to high fever and hospitalised for 3 nights and my late parents who were warded for about a month before final departures) .

So I could really appreciate A ward more in this sense (for the comfort of the genuine caregiver/s).

Insurance is ‘the more the better’ . The reality is we live with limited resources

SL,

Not exactly the more the better for Health insurance lah. Need to look carefully in case u cover high plan but forget that once u seek treatment under high plan, you may be locked in under non-subsidy category & follow-up sessions will not get any subsidies.

MediShield - a compulsory health Insurance
Premium deducted via CPF SA
When hosptalization bills :-
* deductible of $2000
* 10% co-pymt
* pls note limitations for various item
* does not cover pre- or post-hospital follow-up treatment
* yearly limit is only $100K

If you purchase additional Health Shield, one shld consider affordability for long term as once u miss premium, you’ll hv to start fr zero base when u next decide to purchase again.

If purchase early once you start work, usually you may not hv pre-existing Health issues to be excluded. If u purchase later in life, once you’ve recorded health issues (high cholesterol, high blood, etc) it’ll not be covered. However, some illness if certified by doc in remission, Insurance companies may underwrite to cover you.

Pioneer Generation - well covered with high subsidy so even very illl and penniless elderly may not hv much to pay or zero pymt with Medical Social Worker Intervention for financial support.

Some may assume & hv a misconception that it’s unnecessary for pioneer generation to purchase any additional covers. To put into perspective why ppl purchase additional health cover in the first place - to mitigate high medical expenses. In this regard, one hv to look beyond what subsidy govt provides. There will come a time (May not be now but at some later point when an elderly hv health complications) such as long in-patient stay that exceeds MediShield limits or Chemo, kidney treatment, or heart attack with need for multiple stents.

Merdeka Generation & others - if can afford, need to purchase additional health cover as we aged, accummulatively we get more health issues & illnesses creepingly surface. The other impt thing to note is if one hv not gotten cover earlier, best to purchase now even with some exclusion to pre-empt high medical expenses.

Ano impt note is even if you hv cover for B1 or A ward, use it wisely like if u’ve need for specific one-off treatment & it’s more expedient to seek private consultant at pte hospital, then it makes sense if it saves waiting time & long waiting cost. However, if one expect long-term treatment, in-patient care or ICU, follow-up medication, etc, might be advisable to step down to B2 to maintain that subsidy benefit but using yr insurance policy sufficient funds to for for last bill. We realised by stepping down with the ward entitlement, we retain the yearly claimable limit & make it stretch. Purchase of additional Integrated or Enhanced HealthShield (based on yr financial ability) can cover btwn $250K to $1million, you can choose but of course the premium rises accordingly.

SIL father was diagnosed with cancer & altho all children are either doctors or dentists, they maintain their father’s treatment at C ward as they do not know how long the admission or multiple admission will be. In fact, he was sent by ambulance in-patient multiple times till his demise.

In our analysis, currently NTUC Income provides the most coverage for in-patient & outpatient at “as charged” basis after deductibles & 10% co-pymt. This includes monthly kidney dialysis costs. Noteworthy is that it covers 90 days pre- & post-hospitalization treatment (includes every outpatient bill at PolyClinics) which the MediShield does not cover.

Additional Note :

For those looking for Travel Insurance to
cover pre-existing condition, no other insurers are willing to cover except NTUC Income, altho it’s loaded double the normal travelers.

This was what FIL took for his multiple kidney, heart and colon problem. He’s covered with additional Integrated Health cover, we thot best to get a travel insurance in case need urgent evacuation back to S’pore for effective treatment since his medical records are in S’pore.

Hope abv sharing helps.
