My boy is also a late speaker. We compared him with his twin sister & found that he is very slow. When he is 2 yrs old, we sent him for assessment by a private speech therapist & she said he is half yr slower than his peer. We enrolled him for ST classes last yr & also sent him to a childcare. Seen much improvement in him. Still cannot hold a conversation with you very well. But at least can tell you what he wants. Before the ST, he has no problem understanding you but just dun know how to talk. He mainly uses 1 word. Now he can say simple sentence.

what do you mean by he just starting talking but didn't understand the meaning? :? Paiseh, I also don't understand.

Do you speak to him clearly and slowly, or at a very fast pace as if talking to another adult? Generally talking to younger kids, you have to slow down and enunciate clearly, and keep the sentences simple and relevant to their knowledge base. To help them increase their vocabulary, speak to them often using a lot of descriptive language.

Some kids start talking later, but their receptive languague skills are good, and once they start talking (late), they move to complete sentences very quickly. Maybe that's why CDU ask you to give it a couple more months. Also are your husband or you very IT/mathematically inclined? I've read that some very IT inclined people tend to start speaking late, around 3.5 to 4 years old. As adults they are fine.
