High Blood Pressure - Can still do massage?

I love neck/shoulder massage as I tend to suffer from tight neck & shoulder pain. Normally would go for just short ones ~15 mins for some relief.

Just went for one the other day - 10mins x 2 session. As the massage lady heard wrongly and thot I wanted very hard ones.....she started using a lot of strength (Actually I was still ok and enjoying it). She moved from shoulder towards the neck....but at a point I suddenly felt giddy, nausea and found it hard to breathe! Immediately stopped her and had to force myself to breathe hard and tell myself I cannot blackout....things look blur and whitish. I continued to rest on the massage chair and was too weak to move.....finally after a few minutes, asked to be helped to a normal chair to rest.

It was another 5-10 mins before I felt well enough to get up.....still a little light-headed and see flashes. The massage lady then told me in future I need to let people know I have high BP and not do the very hard type......

Anyone experienced this before? Well, just sharing mine so that those with high BP better take care too.

My mum also has high blood pressure. She loves to go for the leg message and she can do up to 1 hr.

From what I understand, massage helps blood circulation. If the massage can cause the blood to flow too quickly, it is not good for the person.

For foot reflexology, it works on a slightly different principle. The different part you massage on the foot indicate 'treating' or 'building up' to the different organs. If I remember correctly, it does not cause blood circulation that much.

Hence, maybe for those with High BP, it is better to inform the person who do the massage for you that you have high BP. As for foot reflexology, it won't affect that much. Maybe that is why foot reflexology is so popular now.

Hi Kwokwc,
thanks for the clarification. that's what the massage lady told me too....she said cos' my shoulders and points were very stiff and tight, when she released the tension, the blood circulation was regulated and blood flow suddenly gushed up and hence the sensation I felt. But she did warn that I need to tell the masseur I have high BP and not engaged in very hard massage esp. the neck area.

Phew, thank goodness I had taken my BP medication that morning.......that probably helped to control a little.

Hi cwc, your masseur must be really good as she's able to release the tension which you could feel the blood flow immediately.

May I know where you go for your massage? Can you PM me please? :please:

Thank you.

Hmmm, the way you put it, yeah, she is quite good actually cos' after the session, I felt pretty relax. The other massages I went so far....when they use strength, the final result is usually more pain then relax. As for the sensation I felt, it was my first....hence my 'alarm'. Come to think about it, her techniques were slightly different from the local ones I have tried.

But too bad, she was not my 'usual' masseur, I was actually at Malaysia Genting - Healing Touch  Brought my parents for a short holiday so decided to try them while waiting. But good experience, at least now I know.
Well, if next time I do hit another good one, will let you know.
