Rotavirus + Salmonella

My 2 years old girl has been diagnosed with rotavirus and salmonella simultaneously. I am so upset as she has taken her rotavirus vaccine before 1 year old. Yet she still get infected by this virus. Doctor said rotavirus has many strains and this could be a different strain. So rotavirus vaccine is actually not 100% safe proof.

My girl is suffering from bloody diarrhea for 6 days now. Initially she had high fever for 3 days and now has subsided. She diarrhea for 20 times a day all with blood. Now her diarrhea has reduced to about 5 to 6 times a day. I am so worried... She can only eat bland food but she dislikes bland food, so I don't know what to do. She also refuse to drink soy based formula milk. So now i give her the normal formula milk that she takes (friso) but diluted.

I am very worried. Anyone has similar experience? Pls share with me...

Sorry to hear that. My ds had rotavirus when he was 4. I remember the most important thing is to prevent dehydration, do make sure your girl still drink enough (I recorded down the time & ml for each intake so that the doctor would be able to judge if it was sufficient). What is the reason for you to serve diluted formula milk? My ds was still taking his usual formula milk and I gave him his favourite drinks too (at that time it was Chrysanthemum). He ate bananas as he had no appetite for other food. You could also check out Guardian for Pedialyte Freezer Pops which can help to prevent dehydration too.

Please check with your doctor (or doctor friend) whether what I said above is okay, especially when your girl is also down with salmonella so there might be further restrictions on her diet.

Hope she recovers soon!

Thanks all for replies.
Coast, I serve diluted formula milk because it is cow's milk and doctor advised to dilute or best to stop milk all together. But I am very heart pain that she cannot drink milk at all when she is hungry and asking for it, plus she didn't eat much and cannot eat lots of food, only bland food. So I give her diluted milk instead and so far so good.

I read that when having diarrhea, should take B.R.A.T diet. So I am giving her bread, toast, banana, rice with soup. I heard crackers are good too.
But I am not too sure how reliable the info are from the net. The doctor only advised to give porridge or bread but my girl dislikes porridge.

It is very disheartening and scary to see her diarrhea has blood every time. :gloomy:

Banana is supposed to harden stools so it's good for diarrhea.
You can try to give your gal Pediasure. I think is lactose free and contains more nutrients.

My kids had serious diarrhea before and I have to send them to hospital for drips in case of dehydration. Hope your gal gets well soon.

Yes, it was the same reason why I gave my ds milk too though I cannot remember if it's really discouraged to do so for rotavirus. I remember the doctor said that the diarrhea will last a few days and it is very important to prevent dehydration (i.e., need to drink often and enough). If your girl likes bread or toast, then do give them to her. Personally, I feel that it is important to keep the child happy.

Thank you tigger88.

Coast, yes I give her toast and bread and crackers. She is better now, diarrhea comes down to about 3 times a day.
