Is it alright to perm the hairs of young girls betw. 4yrs to 7 yrs ?

I went to the hair salon for my hair cut and came to notice that the lady sitting on in front of me is actually a 4yr old(she looks about there) with all the curlers on her head. Amazing... When i look further, there was the mom and her girl friends all sitting in a row, having curlers on their head...Really amazing....

Is the technology nowsaday so good that they cater special solution for young girls to perm their hair?

But think again, why parents should subject their delicate hair and scalp to such chemical treatment....

Hi Mamamia,

In my point of view, maybe they are setting the girl's hair for party or wedding dinner or functions. At this age I think nobody will perm their kids hair. They have such soft and straight nice hair.

Especially, strict schools and all schools will not allow perm hair in school unless they are born with curlies.

If they really have the girl's hair permed, very bad for the scalp and hair. This girl will never be able to reverse what she used to have, soft straight hair.

I strongly disagree kids to dye and perm hair. Temporary perm and dye is ok.

The chemicals from perming/rebonding/dying is very harsh for the skin. It damages hair and hair follicles.

These hair treatments can lead to early greying of hair.

My friend's 5yo daughter had a ceramic perm done some time ago. She looked lovely. I think her type of perming is fine - just loose waves on half of the length of the hair. The chemical does not come into contact with her scalp. No doubt perming solution is not gentle on hair follicles but the hair will grow and in time, that part cut off.

I think if my DD asks to perm her hair one day, and if she is still of schooling age/puberty, I'd probably offer an alternative: hair curlers or rollers and a hair dryer. Just need to use leave-in conditioner/hair cream or oil before and after curling to protect and revive her hair. Since it's probably time-consuming, it'll just be used only for special occasions. Moreover, she is the kind who gets restless easily so this may give her an idea of how long she must sit still if she actually gets a perm. (If she has my kind of hair, her first perm may take up to 3 hours!)
