SINGAPORE: Cataract sufferers may be getting younger in Singapore. Some doctors said patients in the 40 to 49 age group now make up 11 per cent of cases, that's a four percentage point increase compared to 10 years ago.

A cataract is a clouding of the lens in the eye that affects vision.

Doctors said more people are now suffering from severe short-sightedness, have diabetes or are taking steroids, all of which can increase the risk of cataracts.............

Sun damage is also a major contributor. Wear your sunglasses and make sure they come from a reputable source with proper UV coverage. Avoid the sun where possible and other sources of radiation such as computers. A possible reason for this phenomenon is the thinning of the ozone layer resulting in stronger UV rays nowadays, thus expediting the damage process.
