My DS has a migraine problem since he was around 9 years old. It doesn't happen very often but once he has, it is usually quite bad (usually with a score of around 7-8), accompanied by continuous vomiting and the whole episode could last for a few hours, or sometimes until the next day even after the vomiting has stopped.

He had this problem only a few times last year but this year (he's P6 now), he had migraines again for the last few days. He was seen by the neurologist previously in KK Children's Hospital but they can't really find anything wrong with him except telling us that it may be a genetic case (Me & DH don't have this problem but my sis has) and gave him lots of ibuprofen, and ask us to keep a log of his migraine episodes.

Each time he started to complain of headaches, we quickly let him take painkillers, hoping that if the pain stops, the vomiting stops too. Unfortunately most of the time he just vomited, including whatever painkillers or vomiting medicine that were given to him. It's really painful to see him suffer like that. Can anyone advise or recommend a doctor who is a specialist in children's migraines?

I know of a very good neurologist who is an expert in migraine/pain management in private practice, but he is not a paediatric neurologist. My child has been seeing him since he was 12 too. PM me if you are interested. Will give you his contact details.

May I ask what does the doctor prescribe to help your child? Just medicine or do they run through some tests, or recommend anything else?

Did an MRI at the beginning to rule out complications and when MRI results turned out normal, was given medication, but I would say that each case is different. Best to see the doctor and let him decide what is best for your child. The same method may not work on two kids.

My elder boy used to hv headaches frequently. We found out everytime he stayed in an air-con environment for too long or the weather was rainy without proper "insulation", he would get a headache and the subsequent vomitting followed suit.

The frequency increased during his P6 year.

The headache was usu. located above his eye brows. A TCM physician advised us it was his sensitive nose causing the issue. The body qi had to be treated before the headaches would disappear.

The treatment was a long process. The frequency of headaches declined gradually, from once every 3 weeks, to once a month, once every 3 months before reducing to once in a blue moon.

The TCM physician also encouraged more outdoor activity to promote the strength of the lungs.

As my boy has a heaty body constitution, the TCM physician also advised him to sleep before 10pm, else the liver would produce too much heat which would disrupt the qi in the body and cause the headache to return.

I suffered a migraine on Monday afternoon due to a lack of quality sleep for the past few days. I spent most of yesterday's afternoon lying in the bed. Luckily by late afternoon, the migraine was gone.
