Advice needed: 12y Boy blocking nose problem

Postby iamcyb » Thu May 02, 2013 4:51 pm

My son always has blocking nose problem, went to see the Specialist in NUH a few years ago. no improvement after taken medicine. later on we did not pay too much attention to it, because we thought that is quite normal as mother has the same problem.
However, recently we realised that could affect his brain development because of less oxygen, it might causes the bad memory and slow reaction and etc. Decided to revisit the doc ASAP.
Anybody has similar experience to share? Any good nose doc for children to recommend?

Have you tried TCM?

My 11 yr old ds coughed for a long period of time and always have blocked nose. It's like he never really recovered. Brought him to GP and they gave him ventolin to help him to breathe better. He does not have history of asthma.

Subsequently we brought him to Ma Kwang where the physician advised on the diet and also prescribed him with medication. We only saw the physician for 2 months and didn't go for follow up visits. At the same time, ds also changed his diet. Eg. no cold drinks at all, less fast/ fried food. These days, we seldom hear him cough in the morning and the blocked nose problem is less frequent too.

DD used to suffer from block nose at bedtime. Found that by removing milk from her diet, incidents reduced significantly. I also restrict her intake of oranges and papaya. Read somewhere that milk can cause mucus formation. Perhaps also research more on keeping environment dustfree to help allergic rhinitis sufferers. Hope this helps. I know it's very painful to see DC suffering :(

P.S. DD went to SGH ENT and was prescribed steroid nasal spray (which needed several hours to take effect and continuous use for a few days straight). Not a fan of long-term medication, so looked for alternative solutions.

Increase the frequency of outdoor exercise to build up immunity system, pay attention to diet, remove possible allergens in the house, long term medication cannot be avoided, be it Western or TCM.

My DD has the same problem. But not block nose. It started with running nose/wet nose first, then she will start to cough. On and off she will cough but not too serious. But can be quite irritating to hear her cough like that . Have seen PD n GP. Conclusion is she is allergy to certain food or dust mite. She is on sensitive nose medicine for abt two years till now. We adjust the dosage , when she is better , we reduce it.
We did not choose to do the skin allergy test as was told that not 100 % accurate.
Went to see ENT specialist at Mt E last month. He did a endoscope for her. Her case is not too serious as she does not hv block nose. So her case is food allergy/ intolerance. So for a month, the poor girl cannot eat all her favourite food . Milk, milo, bread, cake , eggs, biscuits , chocolate , noodle, chicken, etc.. The doc also give her something to clean her nose. Went back to see him again this afternoon, we can slowly introduce back certain food to her one at a time. To see which food that cause the allergy. I think most likely is milk n eggs.
The doc advice all is bcos of the diet, so we cannot let her eat certain food daily even if she is not allergy to it. Must give variety of food .

For my DD case, why I think is bcos of milk / eggs as last year Dec she was quite ok. Did dot cough that frequently, no wet nose. So we reduce dosage then stop the sensitive nose medication. However , after Chinese New Year this year, everything came back, wet nose then cough. I review her diet, I stopped giving her milk powder last year end.
Beginning of this year, start giving her fresh milk with cereals for B/fast everyday.during CNY , she ate quite a lot of muffins, egg tarts, cakes, etc... ( all contain milk n eggs) . Then during that period , she also always ask me to cook noodles with eggs for lunch.
During this one month period, I totally did not give her milk n eggs. Can see some improvement. Only on the fourth week, the cough came back. But this time is due to throat infection. So she is on antibiotic now.
Looking back, when she is bb/ toddler , there were many times she would cough n vomit out the milk at night. The PD would give nebulizer, ventolin, flixotide to her. From 3-5 years old, she was on ventolin on n off. At that time, we do not know about this allergy thing. Then when she was is P1/P2 there r few occasion that she has ear infection. She is in P3 now. This is due to her wet nose , she always sniff in and does not know how to sniff out the mucus. Which then lead to ear infection.
The cleaning of nose by the ENT does help her to clear her mucus. This wil then lessen the symptom . For now, we won't let her hv milk n eggs. But of course we will still allow some cakes , muffins once in a while.

my 9yo ds has the same problem since 3yo. once he move into another room with different temp and/or humidity, the sneezes start and thereafter blocked nose. he's always breathing thru his mouth.
at 4yo, i brought him to kk. they did a prick test (negative for food allergy and normal allergens) and recommended sprays into his nose but dh was worried that those steroids may affect his manly growth. said we rather put up with the symptoms as he may grow out of them.
we got used to him using up tissue papers like his father owns the mill.
recently, at 9yo, he still hasn't outgrown it apparently. we brought him to a doc at paragon medical center. he wanted to laser his adenoid. we even booked surgery. on second thoughts we went back to kk. doc there totally poohpooh surgery, said it's unnecessary and solely for financial gains. he convinced us that those nasal sprays are totally safe even for long term use. we cancelled surgery.
for 2mths since on nasal spray, his symptoms has lessened. tissue paper usage has also eased.
we have to go back next month for a skin prick test to confirm what kind of environmental allergy he has.

Sensitive nose and cough often go hand in hand because cough is triggered by postnasal drip. Go google on postnasal drip.
