Need to go eye clinic at HPB for Astigmatism yearly?

Postby larkspur » Fri May 17, 2013 9:22 am

Hi,

At P1, my girl is referred to eye clinic at HPB to check on the Astigmatism. A check shows that she does not need to wear spectacles. However that was for last year. Not sure if we need to schedule appt again to check yearly in a way that can try to control if the degree for Astigmatism shoots up. Last year it is about 0.5 degree for both eyes so i badly wanted to check to ensure it does not shoot up. Any idea if i can call and make a appt?

0.5 means 50 degrees which is not significant. If you are worried, just make an appt with the eye clinic since 1 year is a reasonable time. But at P1, she should be able to articulate the eye chart so maybe you can just spend $15 - $20 at optometrists outside to check her eyes. The check is free if she ends up getting glasses.

Even if you go to the eye clinic, the one doing the eye check is still an optometrist, not the eye doctor himself. I went to all these specialists and end up it's still an optometrist doing the technical part. The eye doc just relies on the readings provided by the optometrist to diagnose.

The nurses will come by yearly to check the kids. My P2 recently asked me for her health booklet. Kids will usually be referred by nurses if they are found to have difficulty reading as well.

The eye check in school is not accurate. No machine used, only the eye chart from a distance. Go to the optometrist.

Actually during the routine check last year, my girl as asti so they gave us a referral letter to HPB to do a detail check. So i thought eye check in school better. Not sure for private optometrist, will they be telling us my girl needs spec if she dun really needs just for some business?

The school check told my kid nothing but he was blinking excessively and then when we asked him to see the small print on a faraway signboard which we could see, he couldn't read it clearly. Then we brought him to check and he really had myopia and astig.

He was so happy to be wearing specs coz he said he finally had his "eagle eye" vision back...
