Hi

One mth ago, my dd started her swimming lesson. 2 wks later, I noticed she has tiny bumps all over her body except for her face. Brought her to c gp but doc can't tell what they were. There was 1 week break and her skin seemed to hv improved a bit which means she has stopped swimming for 2 wks. Yesterday she went swimming again and lots more tiny bumps appeared today. Could she be allergic to chlorine?

Should I bring her to another gp or to kk? Thx in adv for advice.

I have a friend who girl has ezcema..she also developed some rashes gg into the swimming pool so my friend had stopped her fr gg. Not sure wht it is ezcema outbreak after contact with chlorine or wat...she is playing it safe.

it might be,coz chlorine is chemical. Chlorine is used as cleaning detergent to remove stain n bacteria.If it is so strong that it could remove stain,it oso harsh for the skin.

It is possible. One of my kids reacts to swimming pool water with a rash on his joints. You can try applying a barrier cream over her first before swimming, shortening the length of time in the water, and double rinsing her afterwards with appropriate shampoo. My kid can't swim regularly.

My other kid gets these little bumps all over his legs from the dust in school and the pd confirmed it is a mild reaction (going by my kids' medical histories and the location of the rash). They only clear during school holidays. However they don't bother him as much as they bother me!

It could be the chlorine, or it could be the dryness caused by the chlorinated water. My husband gets those bumps too so he avoids swimming too often. But if he showers immediately after leaving the pool and puts moisturiser on, he can avoid the reaction or it will be minimal.

Thx for yr replies. I will have to stop her swimming lessons in this case. Previously the gp prescribed my dd with calamine lotion but didn't think it help much. But I can tell her tiny bumps were slightly lesser when she didn't go swimming for 2 weeks. Seemed like the rashes could take awhile to recover.

If the itch bothers her, she can take an anhistamine such as Zyrtec. It's once a day dosing and non-drowsy. You can ask a pharmacist for details. Try applying a moisturiser to her skin anyway as that can help the skin recover faster.

If she still wants to swim, try showering her immediately and using moisturiser. It's a pity to stop swimming altogether if you can find ways around it.

Thks for yr advice. Will put moisturizer on her body before going swimming and to take shower immediately after swimming in the future.

In the meantime, no swimming till she recovers. Brought her to gp again and the gp said it will take maybe 2 months to recover. He prescribed steroid based cream to be used for few days. Then switch to another cream which is not steroid based. Hopefully the tiny bumps will go away after 2 months or earlier.

The moisturiser should be applied after the shower to keep the skin moisturised. What we have discovered (having also lived in drier climates) is that dry skin is more sensistive, so moisturising after the swim will keep the skin from reacting from other allergens in the air etc. I'm not sure applying it before swimming helps as it probably washes off, but I guess you can try.

I read somewhere in the forum that applying mosturizer before swimming is like a protection for your skin. So to play safe, I will apply before and after in the future. will try this method and hopefully will work in order for her to start swimming lesson again. But I will not start her swimming lesson this year for sure. Will definitely let her skin recover completely. Wondering whether I should get her tested to confirm that she is really allergic to chlorine or any other substances.
