Lower concentration of Atropine eye drops can slow myopia

SINGAPORE: A five-year study of up to 800 children has shown that a low concentration of Atropine eye drops can significantly reduce myopia.

In the first trial, it showed that atropine eye drops at a concentration of one per cent can effectively reduce myopia progression over a two-year period.

However, there were side effects such as experiencing a glare in the sunlight and a reduced ability to focus on near objects.

A second trial which tested a lower concentration of 0.01 per cent of Atropine proved more effective.

Professor Donald Tan, medical director at Singapore National Eye Centre, said: "The lowest dose of 0.01 per cent almost had no side effects. There is minimal dilation of the pupil and almost no effect on the near vision ability for the children. All of them can see very well. There were no safety issues at all. At this ultra-low dose, there were no side effects but we were still getting a significant effect on controlling myopia. It turns out that 0.01 per cent can reduce myopia progression by about 50-60 per cent which is actually huge."

"0.01 per cent can reduce myopia progression by about 50-60 per cent"

:? what is "normal myopia progression rate" then?

Maybe it's not referring to the reduction on progression rate, but rather the myopic population -- can reduce 50-60% of the myopic group's myopia from getting worse ?

PS. That poor Minion of yours.... shatterred my laptop screen :moneyflies:

I read it as, if the average myopia increases by (for a certain age group) 150 degrees a year, with atropine use, myopia increases only by 75 degrees. It is able to retard the progression of myopia by 50%, no?

Tankee, for many kids increase by only 50 degrees a year is considered very very good. But I know what you mean. My heart aches and my ear twitches after every eye checkup. Every increase is painful to note.

same here...my heart breaks every year after the school health doctor comes by for a check...i can definitely expect a letter to bring son to get eyes checked and make a new pair of glasses.

straits times article today state the normal progression at 100 degree a year :yikes:

Not clear whether this is the national average or just an example.
