Stuffy/blocked nose

Hi

My kids (upper Pri), mostly wake up with stuffy/blocked nose. We usually switch on the aircon for a couple of hours and later switch on the floor fan with windows open.

I am very puzzle on why their noses are generally blocked in the morning. This morning, my younger one woke up complained his nose is pretty blocked with occasional sneeze. Have to give him fedac med this morning. Hopefully, it will help to clear his nasal congestion.

Any parents have the same predicament before?

Thanks

DC have sensitive nose and will occasionally get blocked or sneezy, running nose. I also have allergic rhinitis and have been having blocked nose every night recently. There was also a bout of prolonged blocked nose 24/7 last year for more than a month. It only cleared after 2-3 visits to the GP.

I use iliadin before sleep to clear the blocked nose for the night else will wake up with migraine on the side of the blocked nose. However, I still wake up with slight blocked nose at times. Iliadin should not be used on long term basis though as it may dry up the nostrils too much and cause it to crack/bleed.

Taking anti-histamine also helps. Till now, I still do not know the cause of my daily/prolonged block nose except that it's due to my sensitivity/allergy. I do notice that changes in weather, haze etc will also trigger it.

Have u bring your kids to a GP / ENT specialist yet?

Both my kids get stuffy noses on & off. Perfectly fine the whole day but once bedtime, the noses either run or get all stuffy. Zyrtec gets whipped out. We have a supply of this antihistamine at home & when we travel. PD used to tell us not to let them sleep in aircon as it'll aggravate the condition.

Try letting them wear socks to sleep.

Is the floor fan blowing directly at the bed?

How often do you change your beddings? Are there more then the necessary pillow and bolster? Any soft toys on the bed?

How long have the mattress, pillow and bolster been used.

You may want to consider dust mite treatments, may not be due to temp.

We banned all soft toys from bedroom and bed sheets changed every 2 weeks. When noses get really runny or stuffy, we put Vicks on soles of their feet and then they wear socks to bed. DS loves this.

Another possibility is that the air may be drier at night and causes the mucous membrane to produce excessive amount of mucous.
Some people are just more sensitive... know of friends who get dry itching skin from sleeping in a/c.

When we were in Singapore, my hubby and boys used to get nasal issues. Turned out it was dust-mite related. Like bb_mom did, we removed all soft-toys, and unnecessary soft furnishings, got dust mite cases and treatments for the bedding etc (eg wash in hot water weekly). It really helped. Now we are overseas, no dust mite issues here, so they are ok. But, I have pollen allergies, so now I have nasal issues all day! I avoid medicine, and use nasal saline sprays. Apart from washing out the pollen in the nasal passages, they help to hydrate the nasal passages. If you are using air-con, it can contribute to stuffiness.

There's also the curtains and rugs in the rooms. We chucked the rugs and swapped to foam mats when the girls were younger for play area, as it's easier to clean, does not trap dust and easy to store away when not in use. Dust that clings on window grilles and above curtain rails can be hidden causes too. I've learnt from DD1's experience that window aircon was not suitable for those prone to allergies to dust. If using air conditioning, clean filter often. If looking to buy, do consider plasma inverters or either one.
