Correct Way of Eating Fruits and Some Health Matters...

Got this from a friend via email... Wonder if there is any basis here... In case you find that they make sense to you... You may wish to try it out :)

EATING FRUIT...

It's long but very informative

We all think eating fruits means just buying fruits, cutting it and just popping it into our mouths. It's not as easy as you think. It's important to know how and when to eat.

What is the correct way of eating fruits?

IT MEANS NOT EATING FRUITS AFTER YOUR MEALS! * FRUITS SHOULD BE EATEN ON AN EMPTY STOMACH.

If you eat fruit like that, it will play a major role to detoxify your system, supplying you with a great deal of energy for weight loss and other life activities.

FRUIT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT FOOD. Let's say you eat two slices of bread and then a slice of fruit. The slice of fruit is ready to go straight through the stomach into the intestines, but it is prevented from doing so.

In the meantime the whole meal rots and ferments and turns to acid. The minute the fruit comes into contact with the food in the stomach and digestive juices, the entire mass of food begins to spoil....

So please eat your fruits on an empty stomach or before your meals! You have heard people complaining — every time I eat watermelon I burp, when I eat durian my stomach bloats up, when I eat a banana I feel like running to the toilet, etc — actually all this will not arise if you eat the fruit on an empty stomach. The fruit mixes with the putrefying other food and produces gas and hence you will bloat!

Graying hair, balding, nervous outburst, and dark circles under the eyes all these will NOT happen if you take fruits on an empty stomach.

There is no such thing as some fruits, like orange and lemon are acidic, because all fruits become alkaline in our body, according to Dr. Herbert Shelton who did research on this matter. If you have mastered the correct way of eating fruits, you have the Secret of beauty, longevity, health, energy, happiness and normal weight.

When you need to drink fruit juice - drink only fresh fruit juice, NOT from the cans. Don't even drink juice that has been heated up. Don't eat cooked fruits because you don't get the nutrients at all. You only get to taste. Cooking destroys all the vitamins.

But eating a whole fruit is better than drinking the juice. If you should drink the juice, drink it mouthful by mouthful slowly, because you must let it mix with your saliva before swallowing it. You can go on a 3-day fruit fast to cleanse your body. Just eat fruits and drink fruit juice throughout the 3 days and you will be surprised when your friends tell you how radiant you look!

KIWI: Tiny but mighty. This is a good source of potassium, magnesium, vitamin E & fiber. Its vitamin C content is twice that of an orange.

APPLE: An apple a day keeps the doctor away? Although an apple has a low vitamin C content, it has antioxidants & flavonoids which enhances the activity of vitamin C thereby helping to lower the risks of colon cancer, heart attack & stroke.

STRAWBERRY: Protective Fruit. Strawberries have the highest total antioxidant power among major fruits & protect the body from cancer-causing, blood vessel-clogging free radicals.

ORANGE : Sweetest medicine. Taking 2-4 oranges a day may help keep colds away, lower cholesterol, prevent & dissolve kidney stones as well as lessens the risk of colon cancer.

WATERMELON: Coolest thirst quencher. Composed of 92% water, it is also packed with a giant dose of glutathione, which helps boost our immune system. They are also a key source of lycopene — the cancer fighting oxidant. Other nutrients found in watermelon are vitamin C & Potassium.

GUAVA & PAPAYA: Top awards for vitamin C. They are the clear winners for their high vitamin C content.. Guava is also rich in fiber, which helps prevent constipation. Papaya is rich in carotene; this is good for your eyes.

Drinking Cold water after a meal = Cancer! Can u believe this?? For those who like to drink cold water, this article is applicable to you. It is nice to have a cup of cold drink after a meal. However, the cold water will solidify the oily stuff that you have just consumed. It will slow down the digestion. Once this 'sludge' reacts with the acid, it will break down and be absorbed by the intestine faster than the solid food. It will line the intestine. Very soon, this will turn into fats and lead to cancer. It is best to drink hot soup or warm water after a meal. [Note: Pls ignore this point... See posting below.]

A serious note about heart attacks HEART ATTACK PROCEDURE': (THIS IS NOT A JOKE!) Women should know that not every heart attack symptom is going to be the left arm hurting. Be aware of intense pain in the jaw line. You may never have the first chest pain during the course of a heart attack. Nausea and intense sweating are also common symptoms. Sixty percent of people who have a heart attack while they are asleep do not wake up. Pain in the jaw can wake you from a sound sleep. Let's be careful and be aware. The more we know the better chance we could survive.

This is an interesting article and I dunno how many of us are breaking the rules :?

1) And I thought we eat fruits for desserts? hmm...
2) I used to take cold orange juice during or after meals to kill the oily feeling, great now I am not sure if I will be getting colon cancer!

Dunno about the rest but this was part of a hoax email from John Hopkins University on cancer prevention. I googled "cold water hoax" and chief among the sites was this:http://www.hoax-slayer.com/cold-water-cancer.html. This sites lists a lot of sources to support their rebuttal, so I have more faith in this argument.

{BTW, dunno why my first reply turned out blank}

Though I agree that there are benefits in eating fruits before the main meal, the explanations begs many arguments.

Food takes about 2 hours to be digested. I do not see how fruits are ready to go straight into the intestines. It still has to go through the normal digestive system. And our stomach really do not have a first in first out system if the food is eaten at 1 seating and not hours apart. Everything is turned into chyme by the digestive system before it goes into the intestines where nutrients are absorbed.

The logic that I subscribe to is eating fruits before the main meal helps to reduce the qty of carbo and meats that you will eat at a meal as you will be half full by the time you start your main meal. In fact, eating raw salads before the main meal is even better as vegetables (especially leafy greens) contain lower sugars and calories as compared to fruits.

I might be wrong and I am basing my opinions on just my general knowledge of eating and digestion and have not done any in depth research on this.

On a separate note. I have also recently just gone through a detox programme where I was on a veg and low sugar fruit diet for 3 days. Yes the constant feeling of hunger and dissatisfaction was there. I was taught to work on an acupoint to relieve that sensation. Every morning, before you get out of bed, use 2 fingers and press into the spot just above your belly button until you feel a pulse. Continue pressing as far as you can go and hold for 50 counts and release slowly. Repeat this 3 times. I do not know if it was psychological or I was already getting use to the detox diet but it seemed to work when I started doing that. Anyways, no harm trying.

Hi Funz... I'm not an expert in this... But will attempt to extract the answers based on this article: http://digestive.niddk.nih.gov/ddiseases/pubs/yrdd/

Funz wrote:Food takes about 2 hours to be digested. I do not see how fruits are ready to go straight into the intestines. It still has to go through the normal digestive system. I think based on the info in the extract below, the notion of eating fruits on an empty stomach is because the stomach takes a relatively shorter time to process fruit molecules into nutrients that may be absorbed by the body... That being the case, let them get processed, passed down the digestive system to be absorbed by the body first rather than let it be "held back" in the stomach because the stomach still has to process protein and fat molecules that were ingested together... Wonder if I am making sense with this explanation?

The stomach has three mechanical tasks. First, it stores the swallowed food and liquid. To do this, the muscle of the upper part of the stomach relaxes to accept large volumes of swallowed material. The second job is to mix up the food, liquid, and digestive juice produced by the stomach. The lower part of the stomach mixes these materials by its muscle action. The third task of the stomach is to empty its contents slowly into the small intestine.

Several factors affect emptying of the stomach, including the kind of food and the degree of muscle action of the emptying stomach and the small intestine. Carbohydrates, for example, spend the least amount of time in the stomach, while protein stays in the stomach longer, and fats the longest. As the food dissolves into the juices from the pancreas, liver, and intestine, the contents of the intestine are mixed and pushed forward to allow further digestion.

I fully agree with this logic... When I go for buffet... I will go against the flow... Taking desserts (Hmmm must have as I am a sweets person) and fruits before moving to the main courses... I find that I take in much less of the main courses (the noodles, meats, fats etc) than if I were to go with the normal flow in starting with the main courses.

totally agree, but sometimes can't follow it as the time and environment constraints

Here's my 2 cents from actual experience. :)

Since Aug 2007, when I'm at work (ie. 5 days a week), I don't eat lunch. I take a heavy breakfast (the equivalent volume of a lunch). Then I take 4 pieces of fruit between 1-4pm, then I take dinner as usual.

Result:
1) In the first 6 months, I lost about 5 kg without any exercise routine.
2) My bowels have become a lot healthier, and that includes the, um, smell. In fact I'm now very aware whenever I eat something unhealthy, because of the difference it makes in the toilet.
3) I don't feel sleepy in the afternoon.
4) My appetite has decreased - or rather, I don't feel I need to eat as much as before.

Truth is I'm still about 5kg overweight, so I'm working on that by exercise. But basically this change in my diet made me feel a lot better.
