My friend shared that her dd, 18year old, has been loosing a lot of hair and is balding. She is at a loss about what she could do to help her dd. Hope to receive advice from parents here.

Has she seen a doctor? Hair loss could be caused by poor nutrition (if she's been dieting strictly), stress (A levels?) or lots of other reasons. A doctor could help rule out some reasons and identify a cause.

It could also be skin problem at her scalp. If you see a lot of flaky skin at the scalp, best to consult dermatologist.

Ya, maybe she should bring her dd to see a doctor. But, what kind of doctor? GP? What specialist?

Is it due to antibodies attacking her own cells? My son is 9 and one day I suddenly realized he had a bald patch on his head. The doctor examined and told us, luckily he still has his hair follicles. Likely cause for hair loss is the antibodies in his body are attacking his own cells. Hair loss is usually in patch for this case. If it's overall thinning, then better to check with doc.

Other possible causes

Stress
Depression
Inadequate sleep
Inadequate nutrition
Eating disorder

I would usually go to a trusted/recommended GP for such conditions as there are many possible causes. The Dr can help narrow down the possibilities. If not, you may end up going from specialist to specialist, spending a lot of time and and incurring lots of charges.

Please go to those who run health checks and check all possibilities before even suggesting any treatment. Please dun use those that always advertise on TV. No use wan. Hubby and I are not fearful of any hair loss cos we have seen a few examples from our friends.. Dr Ma has my vote of confidence..

If anyone wants facial or any skin care procedure.. can go there also... many overseas Tai Tais fly in for touch up.. aging? Not scared la..
