If mum or Grandma tells you to avoid chicken, just do it. While it may not cure your cold, it makes for a peaceful home! :D

Pipa Gao can cure both types of cough - chesty or dry.

I find Robitussin very effective too.

But I continue to take chicken when I'm nursing a cough.

Perhaps you can take crocodile meat to cure your persistent cough?

中医 believes chicken induce phlegm.

I don’t believe but as a mother, when your child 咳到半死 then we just avoid feeding chicken lor, no harm right?

The main thing to avoid is citrus fruits. There was once my DD2 (5yo then) just recovered from cough so I thought it was ok to give her some grapes.

OMG, few hours later had to rush her to night clinic. The cough that she just recovered from suddenly turned into Bronchitis! :? GP advised to stay away from all citrus fruits.

Grapes aren't citrus? But yes, according to western science, citrus fruits irritate the throat because of the acids and essential oils, so it's best to avoid them when coughing. Not sure whether they are heaty or cooling according to TCM?

My mil is still telling me this. So when we visit them and one of them cough, we don't buy any food containing chicken for them. Otherwise, everybody still eats chicken in my household when they are coughing. I only tell DH and DS not to eat citrusy fruits and don't drink ice. If they don't listen and cough more, don't come and whine to me. :spank:

I believe that everyone has different levels of sensitivity, and it's possible that some types of cough may be more sensitive to different foods as well. But my family doesn't seem to be affected by chicken, so we don't observe that taboo when coughing. However, we do avoid citrus fruits and cold food/drinks when coughing (cold makes the windpipe contract and aggravates coughing) based on our personal experience.
