My impression of those who got married in the 90's, the proposal is usually, "shall we apply for a flat"?

Er, mine is definitely not romantic but not to the point of "apply for flat or not". *cringe* Can't remember much actually but it's not anybody's fault anyway. sashimi and I were already together in uni and after 4 years together, it was sort of an unwritten agreement that we'd marry once we get stable jobs so..... I choose "practical" then. :?

Just a joke on the flat thing but I've seen friends who eventually "divorce" just when they are about to get that flat they've been queuing for. I recall the queue was around 7 years??? It's just crazy. Hope the youngsters don't have to go through that nowadays.

Actually, I don't think there was any proposal in my case. It was a natural progression.

When I was younger, I had the mindset that I didn't want to be a leftover christmas cake. So I hope to get married by 25. We were together for around 4 years before we eventually got married.

During one of the visits to his house, his parents "cornered" us by asking when are we going to get married. I was probably 23-24 then. I asked them to ask their son. With the parents' pressure, i also started to pressure him that we need to think about marriage otherwise he will never "move". There was no flat to worry about since we were going to stay with his parents. But there were other stuff such as booking 1 yr ahead for the banquet (the norm at that time) ,etc... that we had to consider. OMG this sounds like I am forcing him into marriage???

Fret not, I am glad that I "pressured" him. The thot that we are only in our 50's when the kids (including the youngest) are in their 20's sounds good. Also, I feel that when you get married earlier, you have 1 less thing to worry about, so you are able to focus on your career and build the future with your spouse. On the other hand, sometimes I wonder if 25 yrs old was too young.... I could have enjoyed few more years of fun, freedom or probably better choice  Haha no regrets.

Mine, as usual, was fortune-told.

Background:
- we decided that we should get married in our mid-20s so DH planned ahead by asking his buddy to help us 'see' when we are suited to get married (we were targetting 25/26 region)
- so after collating our DOBs, he sat down with us and told us the bad news that we either get married now or wait till late 30s
- but we just graduated!
- we registered on the date his buddy chose for us and started working things backwards (we had only 2 months before the ROM)

- we met my parents the next day to get their consent (DH even asked his buddy which of my parent he should ask so as to get 100% consent)
- he told his parents after that
- then came the more formal proposal

Proposal night:
I told him I need the proper kneeling down with ring and question asking thing before I nod my head.

So, he booked Shangri La at Rasa Sentosa and ordered 100-red roses! Poor formula! Told him before that I DO NOT like flowers (esp roses) but dunno why he kept thinking roses are the must have for a proposal. The roses were delivered into the hotel room while I was taking a bath. The doorbell rang, the delivery boy spoke and I could hear DH asking delivery boy to leave quickly (I assumed he wanted to surprise me, so just decided to play along with it lor). I knew it was something to do with flowers cos I could smell it from the bathroom, but didn't know it was roses!!! wa lao!

I pretended to like it cos didn't want to spoil mood but told him the other alternative flowers he could give me next time.

Then he ordered room service with some candlelight thing. That one did surprise me cos it was nicely set up in our room when we came back from the beach.

Next, he told me to go to the balcony to wait for him (so I knew well, this should be the proposal part). Not wanting to be a wet blanket, I waited there patiently though I felt and knew it's gonna be awkward. I was really touched when he presented me with a diamond ring! I'm not a sucker for diamonds (never really liked those) but that diamong ring was beautiful. And I knew it was expensive for fresh grads like us. He knelt down and did the formal asking if I could be with his wife. Then I agreed while tearing.

It was something quite romantic for practicals like us. I had to say yes lor. :D

Never regretted getting married so young cos it was a good time then to buy houses due to poor property conditions back then. We got ourselves a good 3-room and things just started out from there.

I agree with you about the getting married early part. I did it at 24. However, I also had an "ulterior" motive as I wanted to enjoy some couple time before having a kid. This worked to some extent since my relatives, especially my maternal grandma, didn't really pester me about having a kid that much. Maybe she was still getting used to me being married while the rest of her grandchildren were still "mate-less".
