Hi! this is not about baking but I have a question here. Anyone has idea where to buy good shrimp paste to make your own rojak? I tried NTUC but the shrimp paste taste just doesn't taste right.

You may try Sheng Siong supermarket....they have 2 versions, one is stated for rojak, i tried once, the taste not so salty as the other one.....ntuc only sell one type only.......I also tried before but found it too salty.

Hi! Thanks for the reply. Another question, is the rojak paste the same as the paste used in poh piah??

No, it isn't.

The paste used in pohpiah is called "sweet flour sauce". Some NTUC has it on their shelves, but I think most provision shops will stock it. It's the same sauce you'd use to dip fried Ngoh Hiang.

I'm a bit out of my depth here, but have you tried 'Kwang3 Xiang2 Tai4' (I put the hanyu pinyin) at Geylang East? It's almost next to Aljunied MRT.

They stock a variety of sauces etc and has been around for umpteen years. You may find what you are looking for there.

ANobleNerd, thks for the reply. I didn't know there was this sweet flour sauce. Now I know. Many thanks, I will have to look really "hard" at the sauces again when I go NTUC.

hquek, thanks for the recommendation but my computer do not have chinese language. So the words came out as hanyu pin ying with numbers on top. So, I kind of guessing what the name really is. Thanks anyway.

No, the Chinese fermented prawn paste is different from the Rojas type. You probably can find them at the Chinese dried goods stores in chinatown, or maybe yue hua emporium.

NTUC and Sheng Shiong sell this rojak ready sauce Star Brand. I just add some lime juice and a bit of sugar. It is a tad spicy but considered very good for a bottled sauce. Better than buying pure shrimp paste which is very salty.
