the butcher I go to always run the meat under the tap before they grind..

However, I will always rinse under water before I cook the grounded meat.

The butcher does wash the meat before grinding it. I will rinse it again before cooking.

How do you rinse the ground meat? Just run it under water? But won't that make the meat wet and mushy?

Hi jtoh,

For me, I place the meat in a sieve under running water and rinse it using clean hands. To prevent mushiness, I squeeze the water out.

I read somewhere that you should never never wash meat, more so for ground meat (aka mince meat). coz that is unhygenic. and also, because the meat is grind, if you wash it, you wash away all the nutrients, thats why meat becomes paler when u wash ground meat.

but having said that, I do wash ground meat sometimes (depends on where I buy) coz I dunno how clean the meat is. but after washing the meat tastes a bit tasteless.

I don't wash ground meat but I make sure I cook the meat really well. If you see cooks like Nigella Lawson or Jamie Oliver, they don't even wash whole pieces of meat and fish fillets. The butchers in UK are probably more hygienic?

Guess if you really want to wash ground meat, do it while it's still frozen. Then you won't wash away so much of the juices and nutrients.

I don't wash. Tap water not anti-bacterial right? So what's the use of washing it? Cannot wash away the hormones or antibodies.....

Cooking it well will kill whatever bacterial and germs. IMO
