SINGAPORE: Two hawker centres will be closed for upgrading works from mid-February 2012 under the National Environment Agency's (NEA) Hawker Centres Upgrading Programme (HUP).
The affected hawker centres are at Block 16 Bedok South Road and Block 85 Bedok North Street 4.
Blk 16 Bedok South Road Market & Food Centre will be closed for upgrading works from February 13, 2012 and is expected to reopen in mid-December 2012.
Blk 85 Bedok North Street 4 Market & Food Centre, more commonly known as "85 Fengshan Centre", will be closed on February 16 and is scheduled to resume business in early 2013.
The HUP sets out to upgrade these two centres, built in 1975 and 1977 respectively, so that patrons can look forward to a more conducive and hygienic environment to fulfil their marketing and dining needs when the centres reopen for business.
The upgraded centres will feature wider passageways and improved ventilation as the cooked food stalls will be fitted with mechanical exhaust systems to improve air flow, reducing the amount of hot air circulating within the centres.
Public toilet facilities will also be upgraded.
The seating capacity at each centre will be increased.
The number of seats at Blk 16 Bedok South Road will be increased from 1,027 to 1,096, while the number of seats at Blk 85 Bedok North Street 4 will increase from 894 to 1,196.
Other key aspects of the upgrading at the two centres include the replacement of floor and wall tiles, improvement of the electrical, plumbing and sanitary systems, as well as the provision of roller shutters for the cooked food and lock-up stalls in both centres.
The NEA currently manages 107 hawker centres.
To date, 95 hawker centres have been upgraded under HUP.
Some of the hawker centres currently undergoing upgrading include Blk 4A Jalan Batu and Blk 4A Eunos Crescent.
