Raffles Institution (Year 1-4)

Having survived PSLE. we still need to network with other parents with kids in the same Secondary school. While giving our teenagers their own space, we can update each other about the school.

Dear parents,
I am thinking if I should buy the Yr3 Maths textbooks for my son. My son hardly used his Yr1/2 textbooks for Science and Maths. So I decided to kiv the purchase of his Yr3 Science textbooks. But not too sure about Maths textbooks though. Wonder if the more experienced parents can advise, pls? Thanks.

Most boys choose Triple Science with Geography or History. For my DS batch and based on their own observation (which may not be correct), most popular is History, then Geography, then Literature. DS and many of his friends decide on which Humanity to take in Year 3 mainly due to interest in the subject (not grades).

There are some who choose Double Science + Double Humanities. The Double Humanities cannot be History + Geography. Either Literature + Geography or Literature + History.

Some boys dropped 3rd language for other enrichments (AEP, CEP, MEP, ...). The dropout rate for 3rd language is high. Very few boys will be taking 3rd lang in Year 5.

If your boy has interest, he can continue in Year 3 and see how it goes. There are certain windows within the academic year to drop 3rd Lang.
Just wondering, is it common to choose triple science and 2 human? Or this is not allowed in RI?

Hi Imami,
RI doesn’t allow triple science and double humanities. There are five core subjects plus four other subjects (eg 3 sciences + 1 humanities or 2 sciences + 2 humanities). That makes nine subjects. The tenth subject must be an elective or third lang.

Hi JirehGrace,

The Y3 Math RP course outline is given in Ivy during last week of school. Your boy can login to check.

Humanities here refer to the Core Elective Humanities (Literature/History/Geography). There is no option for Triple science and 2 Humanities as it exceeds the max 10 subjects allowed in RI. The optional 10th subject must be enrichment (AEP, CEP, MEP or Third Lang).

There is a separate Social Studies subject, which is compulsory for all boys in Year 3-4 (for recent Y3 batches, I think it has changed to Combined Social Studies/Philosophy subject).

RI materials are sufficient. The textbooks will come in handy if they need additional resources to understand a particular topic, especially if they have missed the classes.

If I recall correctly, the Year 3 booklist covers both Y3 and Y4, so there will be no new textbooks to buy during Y4 (except for MT/HMT).

Should be after school on Thursday afternoons. MEP boys need to join Musical Groups CCA.

Best to call RI Admin or parents with MEP kids in case any recent changes.
