On the 'risk' of kids moving abroad or migrating - I think this depends on perspectives. Some of us may take the view that we are but stewards of our kids for a season - they have their own lives to lead. Ultimately, they will have to chart their own paths and make decisions for their own lives. I am also of the view that many jobs in future will require some form of overseas stint/experience or other, and one must be flexible to take up opportunities as they come. So even if kids don't study overseas, they may be posted overseas to work. If you have studied overseas at some point, I guess it builds a certain openness and resilience and confidence that one is able to adapt in a different environment.

I think cooking is the last concern - till today, and even after having lived overseas for 5 years, I can't really cook. But one just adapts and learns to live with, level down your expectations, to what you are can and are prepared to put in in cooking; no? I mean I am not willing to put in the elabourate hours to cook multiple dishes or to clean up. Haha. So we eat simply when I cook lor.

Any comments regarding NUS/NTU/SMU Accountancy or biz admin? Quite thorn amongst these 3 schools and the 2 options. I don't really want my kids to kickstart their career in auditing. During my time, for NTU BAcc, you need at least AAB and most people got in at AAA. Now I see RP cutoff at 75? Not sure why sank so low compared to NUS Biz Ad of around 85?
If my kids insist, I will let them be. Personally I won’t encourage Accountancy or Biz Ad.

AI will drastically change white-collar jobs and machines can replace accountants (in their current roles) and it is already happening in the States

My concern about the living and working abroad is more about where the child feels rooted. As long as the child is rooted somewhere, then there is some stability, whether it's Singapore or somewhere else. I would like for my kids to be nearby, but don't insist. It's their life. But being willing to go overseas for stints - that's something I really regret for my younger girl. Covid disrupted the last 2 years of her university studies, so although she was overseas, the other things she had planned had to be cancelled. I hope she will get an overseas stint in her current job, Covid willing!

As for cooking, my cooking hasn't improved much since my undergrad days, I think! When you have to, you just do it.

I’m curious as to whether our local Unis now have grades awarded to students based on their participation during tutorials?

I recall getting a bit of culture shock during my 1st year in Oz uni as I scored a big fat zero for class participation. Being a typical 乖 Asian student, I had no idea how to “chip in” to the ongoing discussions in class. I guess being in the SG education system for 12 years prior made me wait to be called upon, “trained” not to say anything without first raising hand and wait patiently for teacher to give permission to speak. I did push myself out of my comfort zone to “perform” better next semester.

Just wondering how things are at SG uni nowadays.

Yes - it''s no longer solely exam or assignment based. Some courses like Business will have a greater emphasis on class participation. A good number of modules at NUS have dropped final exams completely, to have other forms of assessments, which may or may not include class participation.

Thanks! That’s good to hear! Unlike me (a natural introvert) my DS will have no problem in this aspect.

I think you are referring to low level work here?

Not just low-level work but a total revamp of the entire processes. Imagine all the invoices and revenue are digital to the core, accounting and auditing get redefined as a digital transactional analysis problem and the role of accountants and auditors will need to be redefined if they still want a job

Of course this digital transition is still not complete but the writing is on the wall
