My child will be finishing her O level this year. We are considering whether to enrol her in a IB school or JC. Her weakest subject is Mathematics. Can someone explain the difference between A-level Math and IB Math? Thank you.

There are numerous subjects available in Group 5(Mathematics/Computer Science) component in the International Baccalaureate. They are:

Mathematical Studies Standard Level
This subject caters for students with varied backgrounds and abilities. The syllabus is designed to build confidence and encourage an appreciation of mathematics in students who do not anticipate a need for mathematics in their future studies. Students taking this subject will be taught the fundamental skills and a rudimentary knowledge of basic processes.

Mathematics Standard Level
This subject caters for students who have read high school mathematics(IGCSE/SPM/'O'Level) and already possess knowledge of basic mathematical concepts and are able to apply discernible mathematical techniques correctly. Students taking this subject will be equipped with relevant tertiary-level knowledge of mathematics that will enable them to qualify for a Business/Economics/Chemistry-related degree programme.

Mathematics Higher Level
This subject caters for students with a good background in high school mathematics(IGCSE/SPM/'O'Level). Students are recommended to possess a strong foundation in the subject and good analytical & technical skills. Students taking this subject will be expecting to include mathematics as a major component of their university studies, either as a subject in its own right or within degree programmes such as Physics/Engineering/Statistics. Others may take this subject because they have a strong interest in mathematics and enjoy meeting its challenges and engaging with its problems.

Further Mathematics Standard Level
This subject caters for students who have read and excelled in high school mathematics(IGCSE/SPM/'O'Level). Students are also required to have a passion in mathematics. The syllabus is designed specifically to allow students to learn about a variety of branches of complex mathematics in-depth and also to appreciate practical applications.

For the GCE A-Level Mathematics on the other hand consists of two major components. They are H1 Mathematics 8864 and H2 Mathematics 9740. A detailed information of the two subjects are available through SEAB's website: http://www.seab.gov.sg/aLevel/syllabusSchool_Info.html

I doubt TS's child is going to do a very rigorous form of maths beyond the O levels. Standard IB maths is typically much more manageable for most compared to A level maths. In this respect, you would have more time to focus on other subjects you are stronger in.

Hi yoke, is jurong east the only centre? Looking for a good tuition centre to coach my DS for ip maths and science. Jurong was is a bit far for us. Thanks.
