Which subjects should I drop to H2?

Hi, I am currently in JC1 studying in NYJC. My Olevel results 10(raw) 6 (bonus) English- B3 HCL-B3 CL-A1 EMath-A1 AMath-B3 Phy-A2 Bio-A2 Chem-B3 Combined humanities(Geo+SS)-A1

I am taking a hybrid course of Geography, Economics, Chemistry & Math. All of these are H2. I manage to appeal for a 4H2 so that I can drop one subject to H1 at the end of the year. I am not very strong in science or arts. I am just kind of a in between. As you can see both my Amath and Chemistry are the weaker subjects from my olevels result.

I would like to venture into the Public Relation for my future career. And I am considering of taking either Communication and New Media in NUS FASS or NTU communication studies.

I don't think I would be dropping Econs to H1 because the content wise don't have a great difference.

I am stuck with Geography, Chemistry and Math.

If I drop to H1 math, would I be able to take the course that I want in university? As many people says university courses requires H2 Math.

Dropping to H1 chemistry is strongly recommand by my seniors as they said it is much more easier. But I am afraid that it might be a wrong move because H2 math might pull my results down due to my bad foundation in AMath.

Some of your might be thinking why not drop Geography, it is a choice as almost half of the content is gone. But Geography to me is a easy subject to score just that I am worried that the heavy content would pull my results down.

I would like to get some advices from others before I decide which subjects to drop to H1. Thank you!

You hve fufilled the maths requirement for NUS/NTU/SMU business schools, NUS Fass and NTU WKW School of communications.

Btw H2 maths and chem, only you are able to decide which one to drop to H1 after your promos. Some of the factors to consider include:

1. Course flexibility in the universities ie H2 maths will provide you with a strong foundation to take second major in quantitative analysis or economics. Though you do not need H2 maths for the latter, should you decide to read econs it is maths centered unlike A-level econs which is essay based.

2. The national distinction rate for H2 maths is approx 50.3% vs 38% for H2 chem.

3. H2 chem in itself without biology or physics does not provide you with the flexibility of pursuing a course you may desired should you change your mind later.

I hve outlined the above points for your consideration and at the end of the day, choose one you think you are likely to fare worse to drop to H1.

Thank you so much for your advice:)

My child in JC1 and is taking H2 Maths and H2 Physics. He finds the 2 subjects very tough although he is taking tuition. According to the tutor, most other JC students do find the H2 Math and Physics tough.
Would like to check if other students face similar problems for theses 2 subjects ?

Thanks

Hi there,

Well I am currently taking H2 math. I do face difficulties with it due to my weak amath foundation in secondary school. I regret not paying more attention to my amath in secondary school ><

As for H2 physics, I didn't take this subject but my friends that are taking it are also find it tough.

Friends around me are all complaining that math and physic is very hard. So I guess most students find H2 math and H2 physic tough.

Hi! Reviving this.. any clear disadvantage of dropping chemistry to H1? Current combi CLEM, chemistry, literature, economics, math.

What are some courses that are excluded if you don’t have H2 chemistry? Thanks!

Based on memory - Chem is required for a lot of the biomed-type courses, I believe. And also for some engineering courses. If the student is struggling with this subject, then I would expect him to rule out courses where this is a prerequisite? There are a lot of courses where it's not a prerequisite.

The said student is in JC1, think he’s not struggling with chemistry but was recommended to take H1 as he has a B3 in Os chem. I vaguely recall that H1 chemistry isn’t useful as most of the uni courses requires H2. Right? (Unsure)

If he had a B3 in O level pure Chemistry, it is unlikely that he had been recommended to take H1 Chemistry at JC1. So if he did have a B3, then I am guessing it was a B3 in Combined Science (chemistry).

He has a B3 in O level pure Chemistry. (I double checked the certificate) He also took pure biology at O level.. didn’t do well. Distinctions for both math.
