President Scholars - all from top JCs

from the results of the President Scholars' profiles;
believe that;
1. NYGH, SCGS, DHS, RI, Cat High, NJC Cut Off Point (COP) for PSLE 2009 will improve (or be raised) compared to last year, due to strong demand.
2. DHS's DHIP is confirmed a success. So DHS may one day become a full fledged JC, (DJC?). They are celebrating the success of their pioneer batch student getting the President's Scholarship by having a holiday this Thursday!
3. IP through PSLE will be the main route to the top JCs, and President's Scholars come from these established top JCs branding and vice versa bringing about virtuous cycle that keep them prestigious and top.
4. It will be very difficult to get into these top 5 JCs (or equivalent such as the DHS) using O levels results, in fact O level students need near perfect scores or sterling CCAs in order to get into these top JCs.

I was reading up on some historical stuff...
Seems like NJC has not had one for a very long time.
Also it Nanyang girls has produced the first president's scholar in a very long time.
DHS can also be proud to produce its very 1st scholar after it became a 6 year programme.

Yes, NJC hasn't produced one since the 1980s I think. It's very sad because if you go to the school, there is a big wooden plaque on the wall listing all the President's Scholars and the list stopped in the 1980s.

I think DHS will do even better in the future.
I am cautiously optimistic about RV. the result is yet to come out in 2 more years. Though the students intake is a few points lower than school like RI and HCI, they often prove to be able to surprise on the upside.

then again many talented or capable students do not apply for the public service commission scholarship hence they are not eligible for the presidents scholarship.

Agree. With AStar providing scholarship up to PhD, it is no wonder some of our brightest and most outstanding apply for other scholarship or sponsorship from parents. Don't judge a sch just by this criteria, look at the overall.

And then you also have those student going to medical school overseas and here in singapore.
Nowadays, other scholarships are stepping up with better and more attractive offers that students here are spoilt for choice. Even when they are not a scholar, they get a lot of good opportunities in their university days. So unlike my time..haha...
I did some research on the various scholarships. Found out that the President's and PSC scholars need to compete again with the non scholars when they come back to the government and ministries for this management associates programme and also the administrative programme.
Both programmes are to groom these people for top positions in the civil service. Apparently, some PSC scholars do not make the mark after they come back but it is pretty rare.
