My girl is in a dilemma of choosing a uni for her management studies. She has just completed her Diploma this March and is deciding between RMIT and Uni of Birmingham.

RMIT : She is in interested in the modules taught but seems that many people spoken to are not in favour of this uni.

UB: A more prestigious uni than RMIT but the course is more intensive and am afraid may not be able to cope with it.

UOL: Not in consideration as it is a 3 years course.

Could anyone advise me?

Rmit is more recognized than uni of Birmingham.

RMIT University is ranked top 10 in Austrlia and ranked 240plus by UK UniversityTimes.

Her diploma is in which discipline ?
She just completed her diploma in the middle of March ?

Yes, she just completed in March 2013 under Business IT.

Well, it is 3 years but employers do place a premium on it. Should think of it as a long term investment.

How much content is covered in the RMIT/UB degree vs UOL? There are no short cuts to education. Why do you think the business course at the local unis are min 3 years too? Because they have to maintain a certain standard among all their students.

Both RMIT & UB are also three years course. But she is exempted one year based on her Dip. UB needs to take a bridging course which she is currently taking.

However, some people that I have spoken to, advised me to opt for RMIT instead of UB.

For UOL, my girl is not in favor because of the examination format which is conducted only once a year.

RMIT is nearer. Melbourne is also cleaner I think.

Here is my personal experience:

Indeed RMIT is focus on both project and exam. As for project, it can be individual assignment or group projects.

1. Individual assignment: Written Essay (2,000 to 3,000 words ~) based on topic module or
2. Group assignment (3 to 5 ppls): Written project (4,000 to 6,000 words ~) Based on topic module

Project weightage: 35-50%~ depends on individual module

Examination weightage: 50-65%~

People always said RMIT's project and exam are easy to score. However, there is no such thing as easy way out. You need to plan your time well for your projects (time requires to come out for project discussion) and at least one month before hand to prepare the exam.

Think about it, if 1 semester, you take 4 modules and 4 days of lecture per week. You almost left with weekend to rush your project assignment. Thus, time management is very important for the students.

I would said that if your child is used to poly style of doing project and exam, RMIT is best place to go. UOL is 100% based examination. Do it or die... (No offence to UOL student)

This is reflecting the "FATE" of aspiring part time students doing their degrees.

My take, go for a courses in a local Universities i.e. NUS, NTU, SMU, UNISIM, SUTD if you are accepted. Else opt for a overseas degree (where you actually fly there and study FULL TIME for a minimum of a good 2 years). Anything lesser, is likely deem lower class or quality by one of the largest employer locally.
