Computation of H2/H1 subjects for University admission

Hi,
I would like to ask regarding computation of points to local University admission.
Its mentioned about the 3 H2/ 1 H1 computation.
Does the one H1 computation refers strictly to GP? If the student already scores well for H1 chinese or PW, can he take the risk to focus less on GP?

Advice from parents or other students most appreciated. :thankyou:

Nay, H1 in the computation does not refer to GP.

A-level grades are calculated on a lettered grading scale (A, B, C, D, E, S, U). These are then converted into points. Your 3 H2 content subjects, 1 H1 content subject (or another H2 subject if you take 4 H2s) and H1 General Paper and PW are taken into account. Note though, that your weakest H2 subject, if you take 4, will be counted as a H1.

For the H2 subjects:
A = 20
B = 17.5
C = 15
D = 12.5
etc

For the H1 subject (or your worst H2 subject) and General Paper
A = 10
B = 8.75
C = 7.5
D = 6.75
etc

H1 Chinese/O Level Higher Chinese are most of the time, not calculated into your final points score, unless you take related courses in Uni. H3s are not taken into consideration for points counting.

So theoretically, say if a student takes 4 H2s, and scores A for everything except 1 of them, he would get:
(20 x 3)[H2] + (7.5)[Weakest H2] + 10 (GP) + 10(PW) = 87.5

So in sum, no! Furthermore, a good GP grade is highly necessary as a prerequisite to most good Uni courses, such as law. And GP is the subject that is most relatable and applicable to daily life, so why focus less on it?

What signorwinter wrote is true, except for the Chinese part.

Chinese can be factored into your rank points if you do sufficiently well for chinese (or sufficiently bad for the other subjects). The Chinese grade will be added to your rank points as a H1 subject, afterwhich your rank points will then be re-based to 90.

Continuing from singnorwinter's example, say if a student takes 4 H2s, and scores A for everything except 1 of them, and also gets an A for Chinese.

Discounting Chinese, he would get (20 x 3)[H2] + (7.5)[Weakest H2] + 10 (GP) + 10(PW) = 87.5

But because for Chinese, his score would become (87.5 + 10) * 90/100 = 87.75

So essentially the chinese rank points is added to the other rank points, yielding a maximum rank points of 100. Then this maximum is changed back to 90 by multiplying it by 0.9

The higher of the 2 rank points (with/without chinese) will be used. So your rank points won't drop (nor will it rise) if you did badly for Chinese

Doubt so. Mine weren't added in, if such an example is true. Furthermore, it won't be fair to people who finished their O Level Higher CL and didn't take HCL, unless O level HCL scores are factored in. Which would complicate things, since both are graded differently.

I guess if the student did not do well enough in CL and got only 7.5 points, then adding to the initial score won't make sense -- (87.5+7.5)*90/100=85.5

Fair point too....

To clarify, those who did O level HCL can use their O level HCL grade for computation. A1/2 is considered an A at JC, B3 a B, B4 a C and so on. D7 is an S.
