NUS or NTU

Is there life after O/A-Levels? Definitely! How well a person does in tertiary education is correlated with job opportunities open to the person. Discuss issues pertaining to nstitutes of higher learning here.

Kengen

For me I think I will let her decide
Afterall she will be the one travelling to n from school n face it for the next 3 or 4 years
What we can do is offer her our opinion n let her make the final decision
As for me, son told me depends on what course he is accepted, each uni have their own specialty

Yes NUS will always be the best choice due to global ranking
But when NUS is not an option
SMU will be the next available option based on one's choices
However, we do get some negative feedback fm NUS students who had graduated
At the end of it One have to bear the consequences of the decision made, NO u turn :D
That's only because NTU's engineering school is the biggest. And these foreign nationals are only taken in to fill up the gaps in engineering. If you are not in those courses, you probably won't see them in class at all.
"Fill in the gaps"? What gaps? Our locals don't want to take up Engg?
Bingo. My sibling actually got into NTU Electrical and Electronic Engineering with a DDD/C only 2 years ago. No outstanding awards or CCA achievements. Not through NAA or DA either. The entry for locals into engineering right now are actually very low. Lower than what most people would think.

I didn't expect DDD/C. Is that still the situation now?

They are trying to attract more top local students into engineering. New scholarships and higher salaries in public service just started this year. So it would take some time for it to take effect. But even then, most of these top students go for the best engineering courses, namely NTU REP and Aerospace. The other normal courses like EEE, mech, civil are still quite unpopular amongst locals. Engineering is really difficult and the pay-off is not high. As compared to biz where the content is not as hard and the pay-off is much more.

For the IGP, you realise that they only publish the 10th percentile grade of admitted applicants. This means that 10% of the students actually got in below this 10th percentile. And since engineering cohorts are quite big, this 10% is actually quite significant.

Have a close relative whom her nephew is teaching in the engineering faculty in NUS. He said that nowadays only a small percentage of top A level will chose engineering as their first choice. Engineering is no longer attractive to the younger generation. The current generation prefers business, accountancy in addition to the ever popular medicine and law over engineering. We had this conversation around 5 years ago.

Government is doing many things behind the scene to make engineering sexy again. It is an ongoing effort.

Hi parents,

My DD is in JC2 now.

I was looking at the subject pre-requisite for some of the engineering courses at NUS like biomedical engineering, chemical engineering.

It says :
# Students without H1 or H2 Physics need to have an O Level pass in Physics or its equivalent and would be required to take Physics bridging modules.

My DD did not take physics, only bio and chem in O level. Any idea what subject is considered "physics or it's equivalent"? Is additional maths considered equivalent?

Thank you

I think it means have O level pass or an equivalent of O level pass in Physics.

DDD/C is really poor. Once upon a time, you had to get AAA/A - AAB/B.

Yah, they need 1,000 engineers to fill the gaps, but bear in mind it's mainly for rail engg jobs in the public sector, so if you don't want to end up 'catching rats' in the MRT tunnels, you might want to opt for Aerospace or some other engg disciplines.

Engg is a tough course, but if you manage to get your PE later, you should be more recession-proof than the general Bizad grads, methinks. PE, like lawyers called to the Bar, med docs, CPA, CFA, are professionals so their pay scales are diff in the public sector. They can become Independent Directors in public listed coys in their post-50.

Bizads all make their pile in the first 10-20 years, esp if they specialise in finance & accountancy, but they will lose their marketability as they reach 50. PEs can always top up with an MBA in their early 30s and will be equally employable.

The prob with Engg is many are competing with Poly EE/ME/CE grads who got their degrees from Oz or UK. Not much diff in wages, so that left many NUS/NTU Enggrs demoralised...Underpaid.

Enggrs always find themselves looking for greener pastures like China, India, Down Under or the Middle East, where there's a lot of engg jobs in the pipeline. Some of my PE friends left LTA to join the LTA equivalent in the Middle East. Some joined real estate developer coys to work in China. So be prepared if you ever want to become a Civil Engg that one fine day, there'll be left with nothing to build or tunnels to dig in Singapore and you might have to uproot.
