Questions about SAT registration

Does anyone know how far in advance it is possible to register for the SAT? Is the "Early Registration" date on the SAT website the first date or last date for early registration? It's not very clear.

Do most colleges require the Essay test? Or can it be taken later on its own if necessary?

Any feedback about the new format SAT from the Singapore perspective?

Thanks!

I decided to call the registration agent and ask my questions, so here are some answers for anyone else who is interested.

Registration is open once the test date has been set. Which means that registration is already open for the test dates up to June 2017.

Not all colleges in the US requre the essay test, but a good number do. It is best to take the essay test with the SAT as it cannot be taken alone. If a student doesn't take the essay part, then needs an essay score, he will have to take whole SAT again.

Thanks slmkhoo. I would love to help but the last time I took the SAT was back in 1984 and I don't even remember what happened anymore. But I vaguely recall I took the TOEFL sometime around the same time as I took SAT. Not sure if it is even relevant anymore for students considering US universities.

Things have changed a great deal! The format has changed a couple of times (at least) since my friends took SAT in 1982! The format changed again just earlier this year. I have never taken it as it never ocurred to me to think about going to the US to study. Anyway, we have registered her to take it at the end of the year.

Yes, local universities are still options, but she is also interested to explore overseas ones. All in the interests of "keeping options open". We won't stop her if she something good and suitable comes her way and she can get funding. Anyway, local university applications are simple and straightforward - it's the overseas ones that need so much forward planning!
