February 6th marks the UN International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation. On this occasion, join us for a film screening of the award-winning film “Desert Flower”. The film follows the journey of Somali-born model Waris Dirie who suffers from the practice at a young age. Her childhood and youth in desertic Somalia are traumatic. She eventually moves to the UK where she gets discovered by a fashion photographer and starts modelling. Her success takes her to the United States, where she reaches the pinnacle of her modelling journey. Over the course of the film, she discovers she underwent female genital mutilation and we see how she comes to terms with it. Waris Dirie is now an activist and UN spokeswoman on Female Genital Mutilation. She served as a special ambassador to the UN on this issue. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion on the issues raised by the film in our local context.

HIDDEN FIGURES is the incredible untold story of Katherine Johnson (Taraji P. Henson), Dorothy Vaughn (Octavia Spencer) and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monae)—brilliant African-American women working at NASA, who served as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in history: the launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit, a stunning achievement that restored the nation’s confidence, turned around the Space Race, and galvanized the world. The visionary trio crossed all gender and race lines to inspire generations to dream big.
