or were u always ard?
dat's why d earlier posts were all directed at Sun mah.

The baby had some reflux thingy and hubs was too tired out he fell asleep right after dinner. So i had to re-dress the baby after cleaning him up and also wipe trails of vomit/milk on the floor. *pant pant* Plus had to take some time back reading yours and 3Boys posts. Now me giddy like siao liao. :faint:
Poor buds ... Hope your baby and u are fine now ...

One baby down (asleep) and one more to go.. He's still playing his chunky puzzles.
Oh, Dear, Buds, that shows girls play double roles at most of times, even when debating, hope judges will give double points too.

Honorable Chairman, fellow learned member of panel of judges, worthy, scary, and scared opponents, ks and non-ks members of the audience, as well as seen and unseen guests, boys and girls, good day !

It has been very enriching hearing the arguments and counter arguments from both sides. Evidently, both teams have done extensive research and backed their arguments with case studies of historical events, anecdotes of fiction and non-fiction, tales and myths. Truly a melting pot of KSP proportion.

In the process of reaching the panel's collective conclusion based on the given judging criteria, the panel have avoided to be influenced by personal beliefs and persuasions. However, certain events of history that occurred in some family clan serves as evidences of what we believe will lend credence to anecdotes quoted by both sides, but we will make the judgment call based on the facts presented by the opposing parties.

It is helpful at this juncture for me to declare on behalf of the panel that, for the sake of transparency and good governance:-

1. there has been no attempt from any team to communicate with any of the judges prior to, during, and after the debate so as to influence their judgment. We state this upfront so that any judges who might have been contacted privately can quickly deny it now...quick delete your pm....*ROFL*, and

2. the judges have acted independently and professionally, without prior discussion or favoring of any team until we heard each of the speaker. This conclusion hence is of collective effort from my learned colleagues.

Now let me go on to discuss the debate itself.

Way2go has presented a piece of very well researched argument. 3Boys summed up well. All the historical facts are true. In some family clan's genealogy records tracing all the way to Tang Dynasty, the pubic historical documents record for us even the Tang Court were more afraid of human than ghosts. To counter and to avoid human tragedy, court officials had to have the most exacting standard of honesty, piety, compassion, fairness, love for the motherland, care for fellow human kind, upholding human dignity, etc. These information are freely available on the internet as well as in the many museums around the country, in PRC. And Tang was the golden era of Chinese civilization. During the Cultural Revolution, a doctor was tortured to death without any coffin to bury him. Family members had to dig out his mother's coffin to recycle it. So mother and son were buried together. This is what human could do. Nearer to present day, there are murderers who murder and rip off people's heart as a trophy. Human is definitely scary. And closer to human heart, an unrequited love, or afraid to love courageously, also brings pain and misery......not like the movie Ghost.

But of course we are today comparing human to ghost. The central guiding principle of the human heart is that if we don't do wicked things, we have no fear of any door-knocking in the night. 不做亏心事, 不怕鬼敲门. No scared no scared.

The existence of ghosts or spirit has been argued for centuries. Let's not belittle them. Just look at the roaring success of each year's Getai.....even the kids get into it. How come this was not in the example by the opposing team? Did sun_2010 or buds mentioned this ? We are surprised the opposing team did not also bring up the other example of Mulan and Mushu, though the hints were all over the place in KSP, with their wooden horse prancing around. In one incident, Mushu was tasked to rouse all the Fa family ancestors to debate about Mulan's future. It shows that there is nothing to fear. Only thing to fear is Mushu -- for he is too skinny to have any space for brain. His silly idea almost cost the life of Mulan, and his feather weight was trying in futility to prevent the crumbling of the temple. Respectfully, what is there to fear ?

Hence, by now, I guess it is obvious how the scores will be like. Here it is :

Team A (People more scary)

1. Clarity and Coherence of motion (max 20) : 18, 17, 18, 20 [73/80] (good research, good coordination even with 3Boys traveling)

2. Humourous and Witty (max 30) : 25, 25, 26, 20 [96/120] (well interspersed with present day events)

3. Original Insights (max 10) : 6, 8, 9, 10 [33/40] (history are easy to quote, new insights lacking some what)

4. Unique Punchlines (max 10) : 10, 8, 8, 10 [36/40] (yes, yes, the carnage quote)

5. Sound Rebuttal and Conclusion (max 30) : 25, 26, 27, 20 [98/120] (coherent flow of thought and argument, leading to conclusion)
Total : (max 100/judge) = 336 /400

Team B (Ghost more scary)

1. Clarity and Coherence of motion (max 20) : 12, 15, 15, 15 [57/80] (lack of research, lack of coordination, last minute sun got to ask buds whether need help, poor team work)

2. Humourous and Witty (max 30) : 15, 20, 25, 25 [85/120] (trying to be scary, failed, witless)

3. Original Insights (max 10) : 6, 8, 7, 5 [26/40] (what, change avatar just to scare the audience & judges? failed)

4. Unique Punchlines (max 10) : 4, 5, 7, 10 [26/40] (no memorable quote)

5. Sound Rebuttal and Conclusion (max 30) : 18, 22, 25, 20 [85/120] (just a collection of various ghost stories)

Total : (max 100/judge) = 279/400

Here is the verdict :

Winning team : Team A with the motion "People are more scary than ghost"

Best Speaker : Way2go, [based on judges & poll result as at 2pm]
Obviously that is the way to go. Well researched and set the high standard at the opening and leave the opponents in the dust, first impression counts.

The judges noted in the first post at the open sparring debate, way2go made a typo (it couldn't be otherwise) in expressing their team's stand. "What we are contending and defending here is our stand that ghosts are scarier than people,..." This being the 'free for all' session and it is fast flowing, it is pardonable with minimal penalty. We took it that this was committed at the heat of the moment when his finger was faster than his mind. If this were in the main debate speech, it would have attracted a very heavy penalty.

Congratulations to the winning team! Well done!

As for the team that did not get the higher scores (no losers, K? you were less KS), no worry, this is not the T-score. It is not useable for S1 posting purpose.

There is always the next debate to think about. Start tuition now. Please join the CKS Debatable Debate Training Lab. Results from the Debatable Debate Training Lab can be used for KS-DSA application, GAT exempted, GST chargeable though.

Thank you.
