Any one with experience of claiming maternity benefits if u r self employed ? What proof of income do u need to show? Last yr's Tax assessment?

If u r doing sthing like giving tuition (and u started only in the yr of prgnancy and hence no previous yrs' Tax assessment to show), how do go about claiming?

Thanks.

When you file your income tax there is a box for working mother's tax relief. It will be adjusted from there.

Thanks! I am actually referring to maternity benefits. ie when u have a baby u will get 4 mths paid leave on delivering the baby. Of these 4 mths, 2 mths pay is actually from the govt for the first 2 children and fully from the govt for the subseq ones. Employer will claim from govt.

So if u r selfemployed, u can also claim for the 2 mths or 4 mths via govt website but i was just wondering what proof is needed to show yr self-employed income. Esp if you dont have previous yrs' income tax assessmt to show as proof when u only started giving tuition say a few mths before the birth.

My friend was in this situation and she managed to claim 4 months maternity benefits BUT, it was less than 50% of the actual amount she was earning. And it took around 6 months after she submitted the documents for them to approve.

She did not have past 2 year's tax assessment as she just started working when she was preggie.
What she did was to submit receipts since she started giving tuition and provided them with detailed accounts.

This is why I'm recruiting tutors to join my network. You will have proper documentations to prove your income and claim maternity benefits.

For self-employed, you actually need to prove "loss of income" during your maternity leave. So for some, eg. those that run a business, this is not possible, since during your maternity leave, your shop or business will continue to run right? You can't exactly "close shop" for 4 months. And you surely don't hope your business will "lose profit" during your 4 mths' absence! Surely staff will continue running the business for you.

Hi,
I work part time for a company and am paid hourly rates. The hours are dictated by myself and I do not enjoy any benefits from the company. The closest description is probably freelance. Can I claim maternity leave under "self employed" ?

Thanks

If I am not wrong, it depends if the company is ur employer or not.
Does the company u r working for pay u cpf?
if yes, then u r employed by it. it is like service of contract.
if not, u r self-employed. it is service for contract.

For further details, I suppose you can call IRAS to find out?
