Why cannot ?
Of course they can, but you have to fight with Grab and Uber for COEs now.

pirated: I told you they were hogging the COEs of old vehicles. Now, better still...they are bidding for MORE COEs. No wonder the fresh supply released by LTA.
According to market talk, Lion City is looking to put 1,800 new cars on the road in anticipation of growing demand.

Rival company Grab is also expected to do the same.

The two already have between them some 10,000 cars - mostly old vehicles.

But in recent months, both have started sourcing for new vehicles, and are jostling with private car owners for fresh COEs.
Good luck to those of you who haven't bought your cars.

Roads might be more congested now.

the last drop in price lead to distributor having promo and people all flock to place order and as far as i know .. alot of distributor are having backlog ..cos COE price kept going up so now with this abundant of COE coming up more promo ..

haiz ..hard for prices to go down ... then with competition from uber or grab... gone are the days of COE less than 30K

When looking for a used car recently, i was told by a dealer that prices will not be cheap/reduced, because they are not afraid that the cars cannot be sold. One call to Uber, and they will come and drive away the car. Their biz is so profitable…

That's the reason why a 7-9 year-old car has higher depreciation than a new car.

If their financial might and clout grows, and they start buying new cars too, then it's worrying for individual prospective car buyers.

Should pressure the Govt to do something about it...

You saw it already? I only have a whatsapp from a dealer. It doesn't look very different from the current (also a facelift)…

Where did you see it from?

By right, if no uber/grab to compete, COE should drop by maybe $10-15k by next year. Just not sure how these 2 will change the playing field.

Next week got another Car@Expo again. May-Jun bids might not go down...

My impression (might be wrong!) is Uber drivers are existing car owners. So my simplistic understanding is the concept behind Uber is good because it won't increase carbon emission and congestion on the roads (somewhat like car sharing since Uber drivers are existing car owners). Uber concept is GREEN in that sense.

But buying brand new cars and running a new collection of taxi fleet.Hmm... to me that sounds like another taxi operator like comfort or citicab

On the other hand, one can always argue and say that there's no difference whether Uber bid for new Coe or private owners bid for new Coe. Still the same number of cars on the road. Still same carbon emission

Just curious, so long any company is rich enough to bid for Coe, can suka suka run a taxi fleet in Singapore :scratchhead:
Just wondering as a layman with very limited knowledge on this kind of operational /legal stuff

On the Grab and Uber new players coming in, it's a zero sum game. When someone gain market shares, another will lose. It's not a big market in SG. Perhaps some comfort or citycab drivers are switching to the new players....

However, I'm really skeptical about the biz model of getting new cars (with COE) which will be privately owned and operate as uber. Not sure how long can this last.... But gov will be happy coz they will keep the COE price 'high', at least for a few bids...
